Welcome to The Lost World Read 2009!

You’ve got hold of a book that is part of the UK’s largest reading campaign. We’re celebrating Arthur Conan Doyle’s 150th birthday and Charles Darwin’s bicentenary by bringing people across the UK together to read a classic adventure tale of a lost plateau, discovery and dinosaurs - The Lost World.

Investigative journalist Ed Malone joins a band of explorers sent to South America to prove that deep in the jungle there is a forgotten world where dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals still survive. What do they find - and will they make it home to tell the tale? It's the first Conan Doyle story featuring the larger-than-life Professor Challenger.

And, welcome to The Lost Book!

The Lost Book is a collaborative adventure in storytelling. It’s taking place online and anyone can join in. At its heart is an animated web series: the adventures of 21st century investigative journalist Aileen Adler.

There are loads of ways you can get involved and it won’t cost you anything. You can help us to write the story for the web series. You can join our special guest writer Jasper Fforde to reconstruct a stolen book in our weekly microstory competition. You can enter our soundtrack competition by creating your own music for the web series. You can produce your own animation.

And, you can read this book, tell us what you thought of it, give it away, and follow its journey. So join in, wherever you are, and have fun!

Update: The Lost Book ran until July 2009 and is now finished - apart from lots of books like this one that are still travelling and finding new readers!

It'd be great to find out where it has travelled to and read your review. Journal Entry 6 by winghippoleinwing from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Monday, February 23, 2009
Finished the book this weekend and have to tell I enjoyed the result of what I read. It is written according to the good tradition of an adventure story, with some surprises and unexpected things happening, and the idea of writing it as a journal of the journalist made it more special. Although it could have used a bit more action seen from the eyes of a modern society, I can believe when it was written is fitted very well in the books that people used to enjoy most.
Was exactly what I expected from the writer of the Sherlock Holmes stories, with more information on the scientific field as this was anyway planned to be an account of a scientific party going to prove something new and fascinating. You would almost have hoped to find a continuation of the adventures of the two who clearly planned to go back ;-)
Over all a great read, and hope lots of people get to enjoy the story with this action!

A 'boy's-own' adventure story packed with heroics, cunning and scientific achievement. Conan Doyle's characters and descriptions of the 'lost world' are rich and believable.

A few phrases show the writing to be a bit dated (it is was written almost 100 years ago), but nevertheless it is quite thought-provoking from a scientific point of view. It's a good choice for a mass read to celebrate the anniversaries of the births of Conan Doyle (150th) and Charles Darwin (200th).

I shall ask my son if he wishes to read this while I think of the best 'lost world-ish' spot in the Scottish hills to leave it. At the moment I'm thinking about Trotternish on Skye, since dinosaur footprints have been found there.
