This is a really good book, well up to Brookmyre's usual standard. Angel X is in it, which can only be a good thing. The writing style is clever and the plot is intriguing.

I picked up this book at the meetup yesterday (13th May) because it had an interesting plot...and I love anything which has to do with Scotland and especially Glasgow! I will submit a comment on it once I've read it...but it could take a while! Thanks smartprofessor :-)

A bank robbery with a difference! I enjoyed this novel, however I have to admit that I read it without asking myself too many questions...Well, it's a work of fiction, and not everything is really plausible (how come her boss accepts her story without further questions??) but I liked the humour and it makes a hilarious, crispy story for a summer weekend. I will be on the lookout for more books written by C.Brookmyre, and if they're set in Glasgow too, then it will be twice as much fun :-)

HOW TO USE MY BOOKRAY… 1. First of all, as soon as the book arrives, please make a journal entry to inform about its safe arrival. 2. The book gets to be the first on your TBR pile – it is not nice to have people waiting for years to read a book, is it? 3. PM the person next in line in order to obtain his/her mailing address and to find out if s/he is ok with receiving the book soon after… If the person is going away on vacation or else, please PM me and I will move him/her down the line (suggestions welcome). 4. After reading the book, make another entry and add your comments as you like… pics uplodaded and quotes welcome!! 5. ship the book to the next reader (no release note!) and…relax, the worst is over!! The very last person to receive the book is free to release it in the wild or to swap it or whatever! I will keep on adding names for participants if I receive requests, however bear in mind that the names can only be added at the very end of the ray… Thanks to everyone who joined in and enjoy the book – I look forward to reading all your comments ;-)

Thanks YowlYY, got this Friday evening. Due to domestic chores I've only got to page 89 so far, which is surprising as this is a can't-put-downer. I love this guy's characterisations - the way he writes you even like the scumbags! (I also like some of the insights into the character of the lower order of Rangers supporters - this could explain a few things I have noticed in real life.) If the plot and ending prove as good as what I've read so far, may need to uprate the grading to a 10 before passing it on. Psychjo, prepare!

I was right, I had to upgrade to a ten. I love this book. It might be partly because I don't usually read this genre, but it all seems so fresh, so clever without being pretentious, and has really likeable characters. (And to add to the atmosphere I got accosted by a beligerent Scot on the bus this morning, assuring me with aggressive sarcasm that he wasnae trying to read ma buke, all because I had it up near my face in deference to my short sightedness and the glaring sunshine!) Enjoy, Psychjo.

Absolutely brilliant - loved this book! Though I was expecting more to be revealed about the father - won't say anymore so as not to spoil it for anyone.... I wonder if there will be another book with some of the same characters to see where they go from here? Sending on to Talkland tomorrow. I have 'Boiling a frog' by same author, so will read this at some point and add to my bookshelf.....

I am a dozy twonk! I have been hunting through the book for the BCID number and couldn't find it! I had given up looking for it and was going to use SEARCH to see who sent this to me, only to find it is on the front cover!!! Thanks Pyschjo for sending it on. Now down to business! I thoroughly enjoyed this crime caper! It was amusing and imaginative. The bank job was excellent and a great introduction to Zal Innez. I can't tell you much else but you must read this, for it would spoil the plot for you. This would make a great movie if done by the right director. It is not about guns and violence but about using one's wits. Please, please, please could someone make this into a film! If done right it will certainly bring this author into the limelight more and Christopher Brookmyre certainly deserves it for writing this immensely entertaining comedy. Great stuff!

Released on Sunday, September 14, 2003 to afellow bookcrosser mailed in Eastbourne, England United Kingdom. As Chatty's budget and time are limited she gave the book back to me to post to Lisa B. I've popped it in the mail for her, so Lisa should get it soon. Chatty's local post-office shut down recently, so she has to go a fair old way to her nearest one. They are also trying to shut down the main Post Office [which is the two minutes walk from my flat] in Eastbourne along with three others so that will be a total of five in the space of six months. I am very pissed off about this as you can imagine. It takes a good fifteen minutes queuing now so I hate to think what it is going to be like when four more Post Offices go. It penalises the old, disabled, and the poor [as well as me]! I don't drive so add the category of those who are environmentally friendly. Sorry for the rant! But we BookCrossers are active users of the Royal Mail so this is an important issue.

Thanks Talkland for mailing it! I am looking forward to it. The cover blub, quoted from the Observer, says: "Hiaasen is one of America's finest satirists. Brookmyre is Britains's." Hiaasen is one of my favourites, so my expectations are even higher, since it's from Britain :-)

Journal Entry 18 by Lisa-B on Tuesday, September 30, 2003
I found it quite difficult to get into, especially the second chapter about Angelique's recent "job" and her state of mind. Some chapters I found excellent, others (but only a few) I wanted to end. I especially liked the bank scene, but also the two before, those from the onlooker's perspective. I won't compare Brookmyre to Hiaasen; Brookmyre has smarter dialogues, Hiaasen's humor in my opinion is more "visual", and both have their special merits. This is an excellent book, and I'll be looking out for other books by Brookmyre. As soon as I get jes1979's address "The Sacred Art Of Stealing" will be mailed. Before it goes, and I forget about it: The author wrote "Debts of insoiration: Billy Franks and Art Alexakis. Seek out their music. You may be inspired too." He refers to "The Sacred Art of Leaving" by Billy Franks from the album "Sex, Laughter & Meditation" and to "Unemployed Boyfriend" by Alexakis (words) and Everclear (music). Update on Oct. 02: Since I could not get hold of jes1979, YowlYY has kindly taken care of rearranging the order of participants. The book will go to Italy next. Update on Oct 06: Mailed to blacklilith this morning. ENJOY!

Journal Entry 20 by BlossomU on Thursday, October 30, 2003

I used to be part of this bookring, till a BC friend very kindly sent me another copy, but YowlYY asked me to add my impressions of it. It was a very enjoyable read, but compared to Brookmyre's other books, it is not one of his best, it could have been better. I think it depends more in character development and interaction than Brookmyre's other novels, and somehow it is not totally convincing there - for plot developments a couple of times Angelique is required to be just a little too slow (and not about things about which we had other clues, like the museum and the F@NY-PAD and gosh what a name), which does not totally ring true. Same thing about the major plot turn, just a little bit too pat down to be totally convincing. But I really enjoyed this just the same, charismatic thiefs with great plans, really scuzzy bad guys, the Old Firm ( I must say, that makes portuguese football look almost sane!,) and some great rants now and then. I know Brookmyre gets compared to Hiaasen often, I can see why, but I think I prefer Brookmyre's rants, they just strike closer to home, despite home still being very different from Glasgow. I hope Brookmyre keeps writing, I would like to see Angel X and Zal again, even if just a cameo in his other books. BTW my favorite of his books is One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night, lots of action, and lots of fun. And I have been trying to find an image of *that* painting, in the Louvre, second floor, room 28, The Cheat Holding the Ace with no luck. If anybody knows the name of the painter or any more details, please let me know. And many thanks YowlYY for having included me in the bookring in the first place, and then inviting me to post my opinions even based on a different copy of this book.

Thanks so much for your comment :-) I am adding here a picture of the painting, "The Cheat With The Ace of Diamond", painted in the 17th century by Georges de la Tour. It's one of my favourite paintings :-)

Book sent! I've been surprised by this book that I found really nice and "smart" to read... excuse me if it takes so long... but I've spent a "few" weeks just working for my marriage and hooneymoon, so I left the book on the shelf in my room, under the dust... sorry again... bye, Rob

Journal Entry 34 by OlePinto from Ciempozuelos, Madrid Spain on Wednesday, July 06, 2005
Yesterday I got late into bed, blame it on the book. A story not easily classified, as it mixes various genres. As someone said, it's difficult sometimes; slang and Scottish accent do not help. Some spoilers follow... About what will happen afterwards to the characters: the end is just what Zal advertised, as it always had been. Angelique does not fit where she is, so she just goes on. Or maybe she will still try to go after Zal, from the advantage of her new international police assignment...

At last, I sent it this week to silver-halcyon. Let's hope it has a good journey. Due to the high prices of Spanish Post for overseas mail, it would have been cheaper for me sending it via UK: instead of 15.50 euro, it would have costed 8.75 euro + 3.98 euro (2.74 UKP). Ok, enough ranting...
