Jack is a ‘freak’ kept away from school in his youth and shunned by his local community in adulthood due to his horrible physical deformities. Holly is a young girl growing up with her mother, facing the pains and frustrations of a belated adolescence and having to deal with her mum’s new boyfriend.

When these two people form a friendship they realise they must keep it hidden from the prejudices and intolerance of those around them, including Jack’s abusive dying mother and Holly’s supposed best friend Samantha.

I bought this book at my favourite second hand book shop in London.

Told alternately by the contrasting voices of Jack and Holly, this book looks is a story of violence and foreboding, but also one of compassion and the power of friendship.

I found it difficult to get to grips with how Jack's chapters were written at first, as he has a rather literal way of using words. But as I read further the way he used words created a great character.

This is a heartbreaking book, and shows prejudice being passed down generations in the community. The friendship Holly and Jack had was lovely.

Placed near one of the butchers at the English market. Rather ironic I thought as this book is about pigs :)
