Sorry guys... I know that this is an award winning book that was made into a film, and I know that Peter Hoeg is considered to be hot property in his native Denmark (and rightly so, no doubt) but personally I didn't enjoy this book.

In fairness, this isn't a genre that I'd normally enjoy, so be assured that I'm not singling this particular book out for the firing squad. It's about a woman in Copenhagen who refuses to accept the official explanation of the sudden and violent death of a disturbed six year old boy that she had befriended. The book chronicals her persuit of the truth, a truth which she chases all the way to the icy wastes of Greenland.

I think my problem with Smilla is that she seem too gritty and masculine to be real. She gets into fights. She's tough. She talks mean. She opens closets and finds corpses in them. I'm sure that there are women like this around in the world, it's just that I've never met any, so I can't relate to a story about one. Sorry!

This book was passed on to 'smartprofessor' at this evening's meet-up at Waterstones, Piccadilly. I hope you enjoy it!

Sorry I have not got around to registering this book for so long, my only excuse is that my bedroom is a tip and it got hidden underneath a load of other stuff. But now I have found it and read it and I love it. Smilla is an original character and I really warmed to her. I have not yet seen the film but I don't think I will, as it may spoil my enjoyment of the book.

I picked this book up at the Cittie of York pub in Holborn, London, during the BookCrossing Meet-up. I will have to add it to my TBR list and journal it after I've had a chance to read it.

Thanks for bringing it along, smartprofessor!

I only just managed to finish this one. It really is a "book of two halves". I got lost with all the details in the second half where the character of the writing changes - I was literally "all at sea" (to use a (British) English expression) once the ship departed on its icy, mysterious voyage to Greenland.

Strange character, Miss Smilla. I wonder whether she might just be another example of a woman protagonist written by a man, where the characterisation doesn't quite ring true. I, like Ciaccona, can't identify with her. But perhaps I'm being over-simplistic.

Anyway, I've read it and won't be re-reading it for a long time, so it's now going to be offered on [email protected] as either a RABCK or a bookring. Please PM me if you'd like to read it.

Requests have been received from:

1. Tehuti
2. Moondreamer - journalled 2 September 05
3. Gooner

so off it goes!

Thanks to Ciaccona and smartprofessor for their part in this book's journey - greetings to both of you. I really do miss the London meet-ups.

My first Bookcrossing book! It's safe and well by my desk and sending "come on" winks at me!

Just finished. Wow! I thought it was superb, and have been totally gripped from start to finish. I am certainly not as brave as Smilla, and have no feeling for snow or ice - can't keep my balance! - but I did find many points of contact with her character.
As far as I am aware, no one is in the queue after me, so I intend to take the book along to the Nottingham meet, unless someone requests it before.

On its way to Moondreamer tomorrow.

Arrived this morning in the post, thank you - safely and without damage, although the bag had split open and 'Miss Smilla' was outside it.

This looks very interesting, and I'm really looking forward to reading it. I'm also looking forward to finding out which of the journallers I agree with!

I really enjoyed this, although I don't feel Miss Smilla is a particularly sympathetic character. I thought the descriptive writing good, and found Greenland life, the way Denmark apparently views Greenland and its inhabitants, and the different types of snow and ice fascinating.

With Gooner's agreement, this was meant to go round the small reading group I'm part of, and I would journal the comments. Unfortunately it got rather delayed, the group didn't meet for many months, and although it's just starting up again, it's more than time to send this onwards; apologies.

Will send to perfectcircle when I have her address.

Thanks, all!
