Update 11/22/09: Unfortunately participant snapdragongirl sent the book to some wrong person who wasn't on the list of this bookray. The book arrived there, but never got journalled by the receiving person nor sent on to the next participant. I am now considering this book stalled / lost with snapdragongirl, just like another of my bookray books. I am disappointed that this bookray didn't work out at its second stop already and I will be more careful with whom I'll add to my rings and rays in the future. For all the participants who have been left out from getting the chance to read this interesting book: I am truly sorry for all of you. I will try to find another copy of this elsewhere and get the bookray moving again.

A really interesting and quick read. I loved the book's structure: Alexandra Robbins tells about various students' lives and what they're up to in novel style through a few chapters, followed by a nonfictional analysis why things are a certain way. It certainly enhanced my knowledge about sororities and, at the same time, left me really, really glad that I myself am not part of this system.

I rated this a solid "Good", because it did keep and engage my interest. In fact, it may have got me out of a 6 month book slump...we'll see how my next book goes!!

A bit about me: I was not part of the Greek system, and attended a California university that had a very week Greek system, and no houses. So my experience was very different than this one. It's fair to say I had absolutely no friends who were Greek. It was easy to avoid, and frankly they didn't want to associate with me or my ilk. The one friend I had, "disowned" all of us once she joined kappa kappa gamma. Ex-friend, I should say.

Having said all of that, I know there is an emphasis on alcohol, easy sex, weight etc. However, I suspect strongly that where I went to school, it was not as overbearing and prevalent as Robbins discusses. I am sure I would have heard more about it if it were. I am certain that she shows a Southern University, and has many biases. I can't say that I would do differently, however it would have been nice to have a more balanced accounting.

I did find this to be a quick, engaging read. I liked to follow our 4 players, and see their experiences. It certainly did remind me of what is often true of girls---we are hardest on each other, and are fiercely competitive and can be very vindictive.

I just PMed for the next persons address, so should move this along quickly. Thank you again solskinn, for continuing the previously stalled ring.
