"Max Mingus knows the price of a bad risk, but he takes the Haiti job because no one else will. A lawless island of voodoo and black magic where each man must face his personal demons, Haiti is also home to a monster they call Mr Clarinet - infamous for spiriting countless children away from their families.
In searching for the boy - alive or dead - Max has only his life to lose. But in Haiti, there are fates far worse than death..."

Picked up at the Hoop & Grape OBCZ
Creepy. Creepy crimes. Creepy characters (outside of, possibly, dead wives--no one is untainted). Good suspense. Interesting plot twists. Set in Haiti with some recent history background and a feeling for the hopeless poverty of most of the population. Some information on voodoo practices and beliefs.

Safely received, ta.
Gorblimey what a humdinger of a story! A breathless and, yes at times somewhat complicated/confusing story, but I'll say again gorblimey!
The first line of the first chapter is probably my favourite of any book:
"Honesty and straightforwardness weren't always the best options, but Max chose them over bullshit as often as he could."
