I enjoyed reading this book of strength and determination! I loved this excerpt from the author, I think it says it all! "This story told me that there is not limit to one's ability--certainly not age--to accomplish in life what one must. Within each individual on this large and complicated world there lives an astounding potential of greatness. Yet it is rare that these hidden gifts are brought to life unless by the the chance of fate." I would like to see this book travel!

Journal Entry 13 by imawinn2 from Neenah, Wisconsin USA on Wednesday, December 02, 2009
What a wonderful tale. I like stories where the main characters are put through the ringer and find themselves capable of more than they thought possible. It was also a very meaningful story that reminds us to value and respect the older generation. I agree with Bug2004 in that this story should be part of schools' reading curriculum. I would imagine that it would spark some very good class discussion. I already have MissMarkey's address and will post it this week.

Journal Entry 26 by AnonymousFinder at Oldham, Lancashire United Kingdom on Sunday, September 05, 2010
Sorry for the holdup with this book, I've had it for longer than is considerate for a bookring. I liked it a lot. It's simply told but with enough detail to evoke the arctic environment and precarious lives of the native Athabascan people who live there. Like a lot of traditional stories (of whatever culture) it has a moral to it, a lesson for the people in how best to behave in hard circumstances. I can't say more than that without giving away the plot, but the lesson of the story has a wider relevance. I would like to read more stories by this writer, but it looks like her books aren't published in the UK. I will PM the next person for their address.

Journal Entry 30 by Boekentrol at Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Monday, March 21, 2011
It alsways seems the case with bookrings or -rays, that they arrive more or less at the same time. I'm reading one now, that is (so far) quite a difficult read. I've not yet decided if I finish the other one first and then start this one, or if I'll put this one (VERY sneaky) first... Any way: I'm very much looking forward to read this book! Thanks for sending it over, Icila and thanks for ringing, PaulsBooks!

Journal Entry 31 by Boekentrol at Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Saturday, March 26, 2011
I loved this little book! Started reading and could not let it go. The legend just grabbed me. On the one hand I completely understand that life many centuries ago in a village above the arctic circle is completely different from how I live now. I also understand that tough decisions are there to be made. Not only then, but also now. But.... leaving behind two old women struck me as very harsh. Neccessary, but still harsh. Above all the fact that the family members of one of them did not have anough courage to stand up for them. Also understandable, when I look beyond my own life boundaries: fear of being left behind themselves, killed, become an outcast. The story itself was not very difficult, but it still made me want to read on, curious to know if they would continue their fight with nature and age or if they would give up after all. I'm glad that everything worked out well: that they survived that first very cold winter, digging up the skills that were thought them in their childhood days. And when spring and summer came, they even managed to stock so much food that it was more than they would be able to eat themselves. When the story returned to The People, it said that the tribe was not doing okay. No food for yet another winter, very cold weather. Actually, it was no surprise that the chief then decided to return to the place they left the women behind, wanting to find out what had happened to them. Not finding any trace, he sent out their guide with a few other young men to look where they might have gone. Of course the guide finds them and after clearing out mistrust, anger and the feelings of betrayal, the women are 'reunited with The People, who come and live nearby, but leave the two women in peace. Visiting, listening to their stories and finally accepting them as wise elderly. The women on their part learned that they had been doing things wrongly too, for quite some time. They had been acting like life had ended for them, complaining, making life difficult for those looking after them. When they were suddenly abandoned and left to take care of themselves, they discovered that their bodies could take a whole lot, that they were not nearly as weak as they thought they were. That's what I liked in particular about this legend: the learning and discovering that was done on both sides of the 'camp'.

Not the most skillful writing, but the story seems meant to be told not read. I can imagine this story being told around the fire. It is however, wonderful legend. We are quick to judge everyone and everything, but it's interesting to see how strong body and mind could be. Even when there is nothing else to fight for, life itself is enough. Great story :) Thank you for sharing. I'll try and send it as soon as possible.

Journal Entry 45 by cbostler at Sandy, Utah USA on Thursday, July 21, 2011
Tostle, Thank you for recommending this book and for offering it in a bookring. The two old women are icons of determination, wisdom, and spunk. If this book were to be made into a movie, I know two elderly women who would be perfect for the roles. It was great entertainment to imagine feisty Lila and Frannie chasing a moose, setting squirrel snares, and sharing memories around a campfire. What delightful characters!! (All four of them- Ch'idzigyaak, Sa', Frannie, and Lila) I also saw myself at times. I'm sixty-one, but sometimes feel more like a centenarian. I could identify with creaky bones, weary muscles, and the overpowering urge to stay under warm blankets on cold mornings. I loved the motivating thoughts Velma Wallis included in her book. I've copied some of them and have them posted on the wall. Reading the quotes and remembering this legend just may give me the boost of confidence and courage I need. I'm the last one on the bookring list. I'll send it on its way back to PaulsBooks this weekend.
