Subtitle: "A True Story of Japanese American Experience During and After the World War II Internment."

Journal Entry 2 by ThanksMom from Coolidge, Arizona USA on Friday, June 6, 2003
Thanks WatchCat

I find the whole story of Manzanar compelling. The fact that in the US citizens were put into camps against their will, why is this story so seldom told? While the Jewish people in Germany were being relocated to slum-like living areas in Germany there were Japanese Americans being relocated to internment camps IN THE UNITED STATES. Who said it couldn't happen here? It did! If I were a teacher I'd have this as required reading somewhere in the junior/senior high curriculum.

I received this in yesterday's post. I had heard of this book after reading another on the same topic. I'm looking forward to reading about this seldom told story.

An autobiography of sorts, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston gives us her memories of growing up in Manzanar internment camp. The author is also very candid regarding how the experience of the camp effected her family. She shares the isolation and destruction of her family's dignity that shaped who she is today.

This is a seldom told story that I think should be known by more people.

This book loeft me wanting more details. It was really interesting and well written but I wish the author had written more about her experiences inside the camp. I'll be passing this on to the next person on the list.

Released on Sunday, August 10, 2003 at to a fellow bookcrosser in Stamford, Connecticut USA.

Journal Entry 11 by Sherria from Bethel, Connecticut USA on Tuesday, September 2, 2003
This arrived today. I"m really looking forward to reading it, however I have 2 other bookrings/rays that have arrived ahead of it. I expect to get to it in about a week.

Thanks for sending it my way squirrel818!

Journal Entry 12 by Sherria from Bethel, Connecticut USA on Saturday, October 11, 2003
I loved this book! I really enjoyed the characters, and the way she recounted her memories of her time in Manzanar. I was dismayed by what the Japanese American community went through, and uplifted by their dignity throughout it even when things seemed to be at their lowest.

I apologize for having this book for so long. I arrived along with several other rays/rings, and I moved in the midst of all of it. Life is still chaotic. I'll get this sent to the next participant this week.

Thanks for sharing this with me alrescate!

Happy to receive this book I've known about - but have never read.
I'll do my best to read and move on quickly. (embarrassingly tall TBR stack of rings/rays...)Thanks to all before me!

Journal Entry 14 by JDT from Pleasanton, California USA on Friday, November 28, 2003
A compelling, true, personal story - an eye-opening reminder for us all. I thought the story is short/straight-forward/interesting enough for younger readers, as well.
What struck me were the challenges to staying a coherent family: lack of privacy, families not eating together , children preferring to eat with friends, looking for better food (a caution for many families today - excuse my editorializing...), and especially the feelings of shame - all with long-lasting results even after the closing of the camps.
May we not forget...

Sending on to pambueno, I just noticed! Thought it was going to weeblet.
Thanks for the bookray!

Journal Entry 15 by pambueno from Ramona, California USA on Tuesday, December 2, 2003
Got this in the mail today! I plan to put it on the top of my pile of TBR. Please be patient with me though as I am in the midst of moving!! My plan is for this NOT to get lost inmy piles of books and packed (I have marked it with a sticky not so not to get packed!!) but please note that my wonderful hubby is not a reading afficianado and my just pack it anyways. So please if you have not heard that this book is on the road in the next few weeks feel free to contact me! This book looks so interesting though I doubt it will get lost as I will be reading it!!!

Journal Entry 16 by pambueno from Ramona, California USA on Sunday, February 22, 2004
well as you can see this book did indeed get lost in the move but I have found it!!!

This book was a very good book, I enjoyed it very much! I really liked the fact that it was a true story and t really gave me an insight to how far we have come in the last 60 years as a country! My young adult children do not understand how we as a country was so predjudiced of the communist countries back in the cold war, and now I can se where they thought we were so backwards because I had a hard time understanding our country's stance with the Japanese back in the 40's. I will be sending this on as soon as I get Weeblet's addy! Thanks for sharing this book with me and I again apologise for the long wait!

Journal Entry 17 by weeblet from Jacksonville, Florida USA on Friday, April 9, 2004
got it! i have a couple ahead of this one, but i read pretty quickly :)

Journal Entry 18 by weeblet from Jacksonville, Florida USA on Tuesday, May 11, 2004
i didn't find this to be particularly well written, but it was fascinating. this topic is too often glossed over (if mentioned at all) in the american history education. it was too short! there was a lot more to say, i think, and i would have loved to read more.
thanks for sharing!
is there anyone new to the ray? shall i RABCK it on?

Journal Entry 19 by weeblet from Jacksonville, Florida USA on Tuesday, June 22, 2004
off today as a RABCK to LGinder. enjoy!

Journal Entry 20 by LGinder on Thursday, July 1, 2004
This book has traveled quite a bit! I'm anxious to read it as not much is written about this piece of history. We pass the site every year as we go camping and have often stopped to pay our respects. From what we saw in the paper recently they have put in a small visitor center to tell everyone the story. Unfortunately if you were not familiar with what it was you would just drive pass so I hope to go see it next month and I'll let you know. I don't plan on releasing this one real soon as I'd like my kids to read it. Thanks for sharing - and for taking such great care of the book!!!

Journal Entry 21 by LGinder on Sunday, March 20, 2005
My daughter enjoyed reading about this part of American history especially since she knows where it happened at. Thanks for sharing with us. I'll post it on the wish list forum today and see if I can find a new home for it.
