2005 Newbery Medal winner.

Katie Takeshima's parents work in the poultry industry in Georgia in the 1950s, and their family is part of the tiny Japanese-American community there. Life isn't always easy but her beloved older sister Lynn and adored younger brother Sam are always there, at least until Lynn becomes seriously ill...

Georgia is the 4th state - it was one of the original 13 colonies. Its nickname is "The Peach State." I've eaten a peach, but I don't think I've been to Georgia. Yet.

Kira-kira is not one one of the words I learned in Japanese language class, but I'll try to remember it - I like sparkly! ;)

Besides, it's a nice way of looking at the world: looking for the glittering bits.

I accidentally took off the front Post-It. But this book is REALLY inspiring. I absolutely love it.I don't know where to pass it on to if I am on an island, but I'm going on a trip soon and leave it. Where did this book start?
