Yet another interesting read from Erik Larson: this time about the hurricane that devastated Galveston, Texas in 1900.

One thing I wished for was illustrations, but there are some photos here (archived, but originally from the publisher's site). Could've used a map showing the whole of Galveston Island in relation to the Gulf, though. (Yes, I know, I could look it up, but it's so much handier to have it in the book...)

Texas is the "Lone Star State" and the 28th state..and it was once an independent republic. I don't think I've really visited Texas except for a couple of brief stopovers, but I know a number of people who live there, so maybe I will someday.
