HURRAH! Lots of interest! So I have started up a bookring-here are all the participants and most importantly my basic rules to help things run smoothly!

• make a journal entry when you receive the book so everyone knows it has safely arrived
• ask the next on the list for his/her address ( This saves a bit of time and stops the book getting delayed)
• try to read it within a month so others don't have to wait too long(if you feel you need more than a month please let me know).
• make a journal entry when finished, telling us what you thought- did you like it? Did you think it was well-written?
• wrap it up well and send it to the next person
. Finally, please journal it when you've posted it.

That way I can keep track of where it's going, or if it gets stuck
anywhere,
but best of all ENJOY!! ( hopefully)

Running order of participants.

A sweet little book of hedgehog pictures and prose.

The last item in the book is a poem by Elaine Drewery. I feel sure this must be the same Elaine Drewery who runs Hedgehog Care at Authorpe which is nearby.

Sending off to SeeThroughFaith now who said she wasn't home until late in August - just need to find where I put her address!

Thanks for sending this. It looks lovely.

Sobergirl is next on the list ... and I'll hand it over as soon as I've got re-aquainted with these little creatures.

Interestingly enough my son (then aged 3½) won a competition run by the local radio station (radio sata) in connection with a campaign to protect hedgehogs in this area. We still have the beautiful glass hedgehog he won. He wrote (he dictacted I transcribed) a real account of our rescuing a baby hedgehog who had got trapped in the grill outside the block of flats we lived in ... and submitted a painting which they compared to milo . Fun!

I enjoyed looking at the pictures after the book arrived today. Beatrix Potter's Old Mr. Pricklepin is especially adorable.

8 out of 10

The cover blurb calls the selections "amazing", "diverting", amusing and delightful. A few were, but many were sad, serious, and even somber. Among the latter, I especially liked Paul Muldoon's poem excerpt, "The Hedgehog's Secret":

We forget the god
Under the crown of thorns.
We forget that never again
Will a god trust in the world.

"Friend", from Clifford Dyment's Hedgehog in Air Raid, was poignant (but how did he ever pick the creature up?) and accompanied by a lovely ivy-lavished illustration by Sue Warner.

A passage from Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha was included, which reminded me of how much I love that poem (and the Kalevala!).

I'm going to be trawling booksellers for The Hedgehog Feast by Rowena Stott and Edith Holden; the pictures from it were adorable.

The lighthearted texts that appealed to me most were "Scissorspine", credited to Mrs. Alex Richards; and "The Cinderpath", from The Composition by Jean Kenward: "...like a hedge with no rose in it. I might even write about him in a book."

I also appreciated learning that hedgehogs are helpful to gardeners because they eat plantains; and that they sometimes obtain food by rolling around near low-growing fruit until it sticks to their spines.

I have the next reader's address and will try to mail this to her by Saturday at the latest.

By the way -- everyone who sees this book's journal should look at Sobergirl's link for The Cursing Hedgehog. That's one of the funniest things I've seen all year! Hope the comics will be translated eventually as their creator hints they will.

The Little Book of Hedgehogs arrived safely in today's mail, and looks adorable!

Journal Entry 31 by wingGoryDetailswing from Nashua, New Hampshire USA on Thursday, January 07, 2010

8 out of 10

Very enjoyable little book! Among my favorite bits: "The Cinderpath", "Puzzled" (the picture of the terrier puppy looking at the curled-up hedgehog), Spike Milligan's "Hedgehog Be Careful", the surprisingly-angry-looking hedgehog in the Thorburn illustration on page 39, "Friend", and "Be My Valentine" ("But dearer to me than the prettiest posey is the dew drop that hangs from your little wet nosy").

I was rather astonished to find a quote from "Hiawatha" about hedgehogs, as they aren't indigenous to the US, but perhaps "porcupine" just didn't scan properly {grin}.

The only time I've ever seen live hedgehogs was at a local pet shop years ago, when they had some African pygmy hedgehogs in stock - they were adorable, but I didn't think my cats would co-exist peacefully with them, so I wasn't tempted to try one. [I did come across a copy of The Complete Hedgehog a while back, and it suggested that they might be fairly tricky to take care of even without the assistance of curious felines.]

Other hedgehog notes: There's a hedgehog character in the Kevin and Kell web-comic - though she was raised as a porcupine by her adoptive mother, a wolf, who's now married to a rabbit... Did I mention it's a very offbeat comic?

And I got a lovely hedgehog ornament for Christmas, very timely - check out the picture!
