What an exciting way to wake up. I looked out the window to see if the snow that was falling last night had actually settled (snow is a serious novelty to us here, we only get about one snowfall a year, if we're lucky), and not only did I see everything covered in pretty white fluffiness, and even more of it falling out of the sky, but the post office parcel van was pulling up the drive!

What a huge book!!! Luckily my current read is something very short and fluffy, so I can finish it and get on to the adventures of Jeeves & Wooster as quickly as possible.

8 out of 10

Finished at last! Not that I didn’t enjoy this book, but another three bookrings came in hard on its tail, so I was feeling a wee bit of pressure to get it read as quickly as possible and move on down the TBR pile. (Note to self: Don’t sign up for so many bookrings in future!)

Anyway, on to Jeeves and Wooster. I had misgivings when I saw the size of the book – I’d never read any of the Jeeves stories before, and was a bit worried that such a volume of them might get a bit repetitious. But I needn’t have worried – although there was a basic similarity of plot to most of the stories, the entertainment value was more in the style of the writing, and in the wonderful characterisations, than in the actual storyline. And there is one nice piece of variety, in the form of one of the later stories being written in Jeeves’s voice instead of Wooster’s.

My other reservation when I began was that, having seen one of the TV adaptations a while back, I couldn’t help hearing Stephen Fry and Hugh Lawrie doing the voices as I was reading. But they are so totally perfect in the roles (especially Stephen Fry as Jeeves!) that that seemed to only add to the experience.

Anyway, just to finish off, one of my favourite bits of dialogue, which seems to me to completely sum up the characters of Wooster and Jeeves:

(Wooster is complaining about a boy who is coming to lunch)

“You have seen this kid in action and you know what he’s like. He told Cyril Bassington-Bassington, a fellow to whom he had never been formally introduced, that he had a face like a fish. And this not thirty seconds after their initial meeting. I give you fair warning that, if he tells me I have a face like a fish, I shall clump his head.”…

“Perhaps the young gentleman will not notice that you have a face like a fish, sir,” suggested Jeeves.

“Ah! There’s that, of course.”

Off up north to katrina77 next (to Napier, which seems strangely appropriate for a PG Wodehouse book :-) ).

Jeeves has arrived safely in Australia! I am really looking forward to this, but it might take me a week or two as I had five BookCrossing all turn up at once. Oh what a problem to have.....

If only it had been a week or two. I am about a quarter into the book - one of the bookrings that turned up took me three weeks to read. I wasted three weeks of my life on a book that I should have given up on, but the original owner stated in her journal entry that the book got better. No it didn't!
I am really sorry for holding this up, but I am really really enjoying it. I haven't seen the Jeeves TV series, so I don't already have characters, but I think that I might have to look for them later on - I can see how Fry and Larwie would be perfect.
Anyhow, tally-ho old chaps, must toddle off back!

Thank you so much for sharing this, 16stepper! I absolutely loved all of the stories - one night my boyfriend said to me "You're reading that Jeeves book again, aren't you?". "Yes." said I. "How did you know?". "Simple. The bed is shaking again". Kept me laughing often, I've really enjoyed the comic relief. How often do you find people feigning insanity to get out of an engagement?
Katayoun has asked to be moved further down the list, so I will PM Elina now for her address and keep it moving. hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I did!

This arrived yesterday in the mail, thank you myntti!

I sampled the first story last night and had a good laugh. It also reminded me of my dear friend Tania who first introduced me to Jeeves and Wooster and who was such a big fan of the series that she named her silly spaniel puppy Bertie :-) (her husband wanted to get her a black and white cat which she could call Jeeves to have a matching pair but that did not work out as planned)

This may take a little while (the author suggested sampling the book in small quantities at a time) but I promise to get it moving again early in the new year.

Well that took a while to finish! The author suggested in the introduction to sample the book in small quantities and I can understand why. I found the stories at times a bit repetitive (especially when Bertie was 'hiding' from his aunt in New York for a while). That said, however, just the writing style was enough to keep me laughing :-) ... I kept hearing the dialogue in my mind (although I was also a bit contaminated by the TV adaptation that FutureCat mentioned)

I took the book with me on my daily commute and I'm sure meany of my fellow passengers thought I was a nutcase because it was very difficult not to snigger at the silliness of some of the situation that Bertie found himself in at times.

I will mail the book out as soon as I get the next address.

I've loved Frye and Laurie in the parts and I expect I'll love the written word as well. Thanks for including me in this BookRing.
