Journal Entry 1 by wingJ4Shawwing from finding my place, Somewhere -- Controlled Releases on Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Loved this book, such a refreshing storyline, and very funny. This was the 1st Australian book I've read.
Sent it on its travels to Somerset, UK, to my sister's Mother in Law, then it'll do the rounds of the sisters, then on its way!

"A brilliantly moving and darkly comic novel, which charts the attempts of dying heroine Delia -- a modern day Mrs Beeton -- to prepare her family for the future and lay to rest a ghost from her past. Inspired by her heroine, Isabella Beeton, Delia has made a living writing a series of hugely successful modern household guides, as well as an acerbic domestic advice column. As the book opens, she is not yet forty, but has only a short time to live. She is preoccupied with how to prepare herself and her family for death, from writing exhaustive lists to teaching her young daughters how to make a perfect cup of tea. What she needs, more than anything, is a manual -- exactly the kind she is the expert at writing. Realising this could be her greatest achievement (for who could be better equipped to write The Household Guide to Dying?) she sets to work. But, in the writing, Delia is forced to confront the ghosts of her past, and the events of fourteen years previously. There is a journey she needs to make, back to the landscape of her past, and one last vital thing she needs to do.Hugely original, life affirming and humorous, The Household Guide to Dying illuminates love, loss, family and the place we call home."

Sending this over to the UK for some of my friends and family to read and then will be making it into a Bookring

I received this book mysteriously through the post!

Any novel in which the protaganist's surname is Bennet and she names her 5 hens after the 5 Bennett daughters in 'P&P' according to their personalities is a winner for me! I can't believe how many negative or disinterested reviews there have been for this wonderful brave book. I had to read the last few chapters in short bursts because it was so affecting. As a mother of a little boy myself I could totally empathise with the mad things she came up with to try to protect her children even in death - hers or their's. When I read in the author notes that Debra Adelaide's son had contracted and fought successfully leukemia whilst she was writing this book I thought it was even braver a subject for her to take on. And how sexy is Archie?! Loved it.

Firstly huge apologies for keeping this book longer than I should have, thanks to J4shaw for the gentle reminder and understanding :)

Given the subject of the book I found quite light hearted and funny in places, which surprised me a little and I did think that I shouldn't smile or laugh at such a subject, but then I suppose maybe that was the point! Then in other places it broke my heart and made me cry. Thanks for sharing, on its way to the next person today.

There is nothing particularly wrong with this book, but it just did not reach me. I guess maybe it didn't quite live up to what I wanted it to be. I thought some of the attitudes to death were portrayed in a strange way, quite dismissive. It was hard to get a feeling of the time throughout the story as it switches back and forth between the two main scenarios (home life and the final journey). Nevertheless there were some honest and relevant pieces - it just didn't work for me. Hope the next reader enjoys this more than I did, and will send on when I have the address.

Finished reading it. I must say that it didn't meet my expectations. Those might have changed a bit over time, too. I ended up skipping parts of the book, and I found others a bit too dragging/predictable. However: thanks for sharing!
I'll be contacting the next person on the list and update this post when I've sent it on. Fingers crossed that someone in Europe still wants to read it! Especially since postage has become quite expensive in the past few years *gulp*.

I kept the book for a long time. I had a high TBR and less time to read in the summertime with journeys, family, friends.
I'm happy to have read it. In fact I was a bit reluctant but I can let a book pass without giving it a try.
And I enjoyed it.

Reading in the ackowledgements that the author's yougest son faced and fighted leukemia when she was partway through the novel disturbed me though.

PMing the next.

What's an advice columnist to do when she discovers she is dying? Write a book providing advice about dying, of course.

And that's what Delia does, in this little novel that's a poignant mix of clever columns and stories from Delia's difficult past along with stories about her life as a dying woman.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Mikimouse never replied, so I sent this on to 2of3Rs today!

This was an okay read. I think the main problem is that I never got attached to any of the characters and felt that the book unsuccessfully tried to mesh too many threads. In addition, there were too many parts of the book I found entirely implausible. There were some great passages about the nature of housework and I liked the idea of Delia's "household guides," but I wished the entire plot point involving Sonny had been much shorter, or even thrown out entirely. Then the book could have focused more thoroughly and thoughtfully on other things, and been shorter too - I don't mind long books, but this one just seemed to drag.

Thanks for sharing anyway - it was definitely interesting to read an Australian book. I think it's the first Aussie book I've ever read!

Last time I read this book in May 2010 I said "I loved this book, as much as you can love a sad book, it was a bit strange in places but amazing in others!".
Rereading books doesn't always give you the results you are expecting.
Perhaps I shouldn't have re-read this, perhaps I should have stopped.
Life experience affects how you enjoy books, back in 2010 I would have breezed through this book, now all it did was make me sad and at points disgusted and nauseous.

I found the book dragged a little for the first half, but the second half grabbed me tightly. There are some lovely elements about the book and the premise is intriguing with lots of promise, but somehow didn't hang all that well together. However, the sections dealing with Sonny were gripping and as I say, after a certain point, I couldn't put it down.

Just received this book from bookseekerAT - ( thanks for sending it)- this was quite a surprise because I don't remember ever asking to be on the bookring but now that I am on the site, I can see that it started in 2009 and later got stalled for a couple of years, so no wonder I didn't remember anything!

Anyway it was a pleasant surprise and now that I have started reading it, I can see why I would have asked to join the bookring as it is a delightful read. I know the subject theme is sad but so far it is refreshing and honest and I'm enjoying it so will let you know what I think at the end - it shouldn't take me very long! Thanks J4shaw for starting the bookring :)

Journal Entry 41 by Arrietty at Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Sunday, May 25, 2014
Oh well, I loved this book even though it was sad at the end and of course I bawled my eyes out! I loved Delia's wittiness and observations about dying, family, bereavement and love. To me it wasn't so much as sad but touching and realistic. This is not so much a book about dying but how to live your life before you leave it.

The book has had mixed reviews, here and online, but I loved it, it appealed to my sense of quirkiness and the bizarre. Plus we don't talk much about dying let alone have some fun with it. I did enjoy a giggle over Delia's normal housekeeping column entries too! If I learnt one thing from this book, that would be to spend more time in appreciation of the soothing and quirky actions of chicken!

I will now contact Blundery Baldivis, WA, Australia and keep the book moving. Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 46 by wingmeganhwing at Thornbury, Victoria Australia on Wednesday, October 15, 2014
Unlike the last few journallers, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I finished it a couple of weeks ago and have been unable to journal it earlier due to too much happening in my life right now!
The story brought tears to my eyes as Delia's story unfolded in the form of a guide on dying. The mix of humour and Delia's approach to death was handled well by the author. I did think the coffin idea was a bit macabre, but liked Archie's approach to adding his personal touch. I loved the relationship with the old neighbour which altered as Delia began to understand him and herself at the same time. The story of her son Sonny added more interest for me and I thought the search she undertook concerning him completed the life cycle and gave the subject of death a positive outcome.
I have PMed the last reader (Wodfest) but as yet have had no response. Would you like me to send this home to you now J4shaw?

I have been gently reminded that I've not yet made a move with this book. I do apologise. I've been overseas, and since I've been back I've been very busy. But it's long weekend so I hope to make a start on it over that time. (I did start in December, but I'll have to go back to it as I've been totally distracted since.)

Journal Entry 49 by livrecache at Hobart, Tasmania Australia on Monday, March 16, 2015
I'm afraid that, overall, I haven't found this book to be very engaging – but then I haven't finished it (probably because I'm not engaged by it). Although it's quite appealingly written, I have many other books and things demanding my attention just now. I shall PM the next person on the list to try to get the ring moving again, and in the meantime I shall try to finish it, as sufficient people have commended it to make me feel I might be being a little harsh.

Journal Entry 51 by livrecache at Hobart, Tasmania Australia on Sunday, March 29, 2015
I did finish reading this book after all. At times I thought it dragged but and I found that it was worth persevering with, even if it is at times predictable. I did like the elements of whimsy (the Austen references) and humour (particularly her advice column), but also I thought it patronising and contrived. But it was a clever idea, and quite well written, although I think it could have been better put together structurally.

Journal Entry 54 by briz-cowgirl at Perth City, Western Australia Australia on Friday, May 22, 2015
Well I've just finished this book bawling, and I'm not sure if it's the combination of sleep deprivation being on night shifts, or the emotions this book stirred in me I don't know.
It did take a little while for me to get into it, but about 1/3 of the way I was hooked.
I enjoyed the swinging between Delia's past and present, and especially the little letter excerpts that Delia's readers had sent her asking for advice.
It made me think about family who had passed after a prolonged period like Delia, and whether if I were in her shoes would I also want to be so organised in controlling the process.
Anyway, I really loved this book and I think I'll be buying a copy for someone special who this book would mean a lot to.
Thanks J4shaw for starting this bookring. I believe she has sent me the next participants address (Wodfest), so I'll be sending on this weekend.

Like many of the previous readers, I have mixed feelings about this book. The 'advice wanted' letters provided some comic relief when needed.

I confess to skimming when the author dwelled on the merits of hanging out the laundry and other minutia and the entire chapter about autopsies. Too much detail for me! But, overall, a good character study.

I can see why this book collected such a variety of reactions - I have some strongly different opinions all by myself. I disliked the idea of Delia trying to plan her young daughter's wedding, and I found the cutting back-and-forth between past and present frustrating. But like several other readers, I appreciated the correspondence between Delia and her readers. Original and refreshing!

The part the saved the book, for me, was Chapter 55, where she reflects on some of the books that have been important to her, and how her responses to then have changed as she faces the end of her life. I agreed deeply with her on some of her favorites, and yearned to tell her that James Joyce is full of crap and she shouldn't waste any more time on him. Her mention of 'The Stone Diaries' has even prompted me to give it another chance, since I wasn't impressed on first reading, and now I want to try to find out what I'm missing. This chapter completely engaged me, and for the first time I began to sympathise with Delia.

I'll contact Jotka for the mailing address so I can send this on.
