Infidel was an eye-opener and inspirational in many ways, but some of Hirsi Ali's pessimism about the capacity of Islam for change was hard to accept. Much of it was very insightful, though, so perhaps that's my naivete speaking.

I've PM'd the next person, so I'll send it as soon as I get her address. Sorry about the delay; I just moved states and started a new job.

10 out of 10

What a book! Very hard at times (I had to close it down a few times not to feel sick) yet very inspiring, this is a book that should be read by as many people as possible to open our eyes to religion extremism.

I was rather taken aback when reading the foreword by Christopher Hitchens. I found it racist and it got me worried about reading this book. But I was glad to find Ayaan Hirsi Ali's story and tone very different.

The mentioning of Theo van Gogh's murder in the introduction probably made me take this story much more seriously from the start as I remembered hearing about it, though not the details or the fact that it was related to the author.

Like many people in Europe, I have always thought that freedom of speech and faith naturally go together but thanks to this biography, I realise that the uneasy feelings I have towards people who show openly their refusal to integrate to the societies they have joined might sometimes be justified.

I do not think that Ayaan Hirsi Ali's experience can be generalised in the Western countries as I believe that many people understand that the 'rules' about how to follow a religion cannot be applied today in the same way as when they were written. I hope however that this book can encourage governments to adopt a different approach towards any kind of community than simply accept everything under the excuse of freedom. We should not forget that 'La liberté de l'un s'arrête où commence celle de l'autre' i.e. 'One's freedom stops where another's starts'...

This book was also a good reminder of the gap between our societies. I had to smile when the author mentions how clean the streets are in Germany - Germany does have a very good record from that point of view, yet who has never complained about how dirty streets in Western societies are?

A story that will no doubt stay with me.

Thank you LadyKnightNiko and lauraloo29 for sharing this book.

An amazing book. Ayaan Hirst Ali has a stunning life to tell us about. It made me want to find out more about Islam and to challenge my views some of the rules that govern the lives of devout believers. She is a brave woman, and an inspiration to anyone who wants to follow what they believe
