Whoa!! What a powerful story/message written by Elie Wiesel about his experience, as a teenager of 15-16 years of age, in the Auschwitz & Buchenwald concentration camps from 1944-1945.

I enjoyed listening to the unabridged audiobook of "Night" very much. It was narrated by George Guidall and I felt he did a wonderful job narrating "Night".

In addition to narrating "Night", George Guidall also narrates Elie Wiesel's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in 1986 as well as the new preface written for "Night" by Elie Wiesel.

Below is a quote from Elie Wiesel's 1986 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech (http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1986/wiesel-acceptance.html):

"And then I explained to him how naive we were, that the world did know and remain silent. And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe."

Thank you for sharing, FeistyPom2love! :-)

This was a wonderful read, very gripping. I agree with previous readers that it was very well read. Guidall did a great job IMO. I was also glad that the Nobel speech was included in the text as I had not read this before. The speech was beautiful and he said so many important things. The book was a difficult read but very rewarding. I in one way loved the flashbacks to his happier past, but at the same time they were saddening because I knew what must be coming ... :-( All in all a very moving book.

I'm sorry to have kept this book for so long - it will be on its way to Denmark tomorrow. :-)

Thank you for sharing this important book with us, Feisty!

I don't think 'happy reading' is the right thing to wish future readers of this book ... but I hope you will all have rewarding experiences with it. :-)

Arrived today. I'll start "reading" it as soon as I finish my current audiobook.

Journal Entry 12 by DitteL from Næstved, Storstrøms Amt Denmark on Friday, January 15, 2010
My first thought about this book: Its difficult to understand why people can be so cruel to other people. How can anyone decide that one person is worth more than another? We are after all, all made of flesh and blood and nothing else.

I don't know if enjoyed is the right word to use about my experience of this book, but it has certainly made me think once again about the horrors that all those poor people had to face during WWII. - And I think that is the most important thing, that we keep on being reminded of what happened, that we never forget what one man and his followers where allowed to do.

10 years ago, I actually visited Auswitch and I remember how difficult it was to imagine all the pain and suffering that had been a part of every day life in the camp, but every time i read or listen to a tale from an old "inmate" I'm thankful that I was free to walk under the gate with the famous words Arbeit Macht Frei and back out into freedom.

Thank you for shaing, the book will continue its journey as sson as I get the next readers address.

One certainly can't use the word "enjoy" to describe this book. But I am glad to have had the audiobook experience. The spoken words move more slowly, and thus sink more deeply into my consciousness. This is so good I'd consider buying it so I could listen to it again periodically - "Lest we forget."

Incidentally, I agree with LeishaCamden about George Guidall. I had previously listened to an audiobook read by him, by an author I'm not particularly fond of, and not been impressed. Now I see that he is versatile and skilled enough to modify his style significantly to match the book he is performing. It's a real eye-opener to find out how good he really is when the material is worthy of his talent.

Journal Entry 24 by imawinn2 from Neenah, Wisconsin USA on Wednesday, May 5, 2010
I decided to listen to this audiobook while doing some painting in our house. I found I had to listen to the whole thing in one listening session (which meant I got a lot of painting done). A truly horrific and sad experience for the author but I am so glad to hear his account. This is a story that I feel every generation should listen to, so that no one forgets the atrocities that were committed and most important, the people who died at the hands of such monstrous actions. In this way, hopefully we will not be watching bystanders and stand up against those who commit cruel treatment to our fellow human beings. Thank you so much for sharing this important piece of work.

I have contacted the next in line and will send it off as soon as I get an address.
