I wasn't sure he could do it, but I'm pleasantly surprised. I think this book is about as good as One Door Away from Heaven.
This is the tale of two escaped genetic experiments. One is a beautiful, wonderful dog, a golden retreiver named Einstein that thinks as well as a man, but not like a man. The other is The Outsider, a monster, a hybrid abomination, designed to kill. "As wonderful, right, and good as the dog was--well, The Outsider was every bit as hideous, wrong, and evil." One creature is driven by love, the other by hatred. As the Outsider stalks Einstein, others are trying to hunt down both. But the Outsider is not just a mindless killing machine. It is smart, perhaps as smart as Einstein. It was created to destroy, and it can't help being what it was made to be. It hates its makers, hates itself, and most of all, it hates Einstein. The Outsider reminds me a little of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. It is a wretched, evil creature, but something to be pitied as well as feared.
This is also the story of a man and a woman whose lives are changed forever by their encounter with this wonderful dog, and who must escape its evil twin until they can face it on their own terms. It is a tale of the promises and perils of technology, and of the transformative power of love.

Love alone is capable of uniting living beings in such a way as to complete and fulfill them, for it alone takes them and joins them by what is deepest in themselves.

I received this in the mail today from phantomreader42. It looks like a good story. I just started a book and I'm expecting a bookring book in a day or so, so it may be a week or two before I get to read it. I'm looking forward to it. :-)
Thanks phantomreader42!

What a beautiful, sad, and inspirational tale. Watching the three main characters emerge from isolation and fear into the bonds of friendship, love, loyalty, and family was wonderful. My husband grabbed this book and read it before I got the chance, so I was a little slow getting to it - we both enjoyed it.
Just an aside: Dean Koontz writes wonderful notes about his novels. Reading his Afterword notes is almost as much of a treat as reading his novels.
This book is going to travel as a bookray for a bit.

I've just received this book as a bookray....it's going straight to the front of the TBR pile.
Fantastic and endearing canine charater, reminds me of a similar character in "Seize The Night" although the story is way better I think.
Sent to Andycap14 on the 4th August.

Recieved Today and will read ASAP
Now I want a dog!!! And I can only hope that he will show some signs of intelligence.
The book was great, although I don't think the subplot of with the assassin was necessary. The transformation of the main characters and the hunt for the Outsider, in my opinion, was enough to carry the story.
I enjoyed it greatly, even though my want/need for a dog of my own has now increased.
Thanks for the chance to read this book.
