A woman asks for Travis McGee's help in escaping her husband and running away with another man. He doesn't much like her, isn't inclined to help her, and isn't really sure she really wants his help. Then she is murdered right before his eyes, and the police won't believe him, so he tries to find out why she was killed. Other disappearances seem to be connected.
