The Piggly Wiggly (love that name!)has been the hub of the community of Second Creek but now it may be forced to shut down. Determined to keep her favorite market open & help out Mr Choppy the owner, Laurie Lepanto enlists the help of her fellow "Nitwitts", (a group of influential widows who love to socialise & drink Bloody Marys) to try & save the Piggly Wiggly. Handsome widower & former ballroom dancer Powell Hampton is roped into Laurie's scheme, & soon they have the ladies of Second Creek foxtrotting back into the market....& up & down the aisles -while someone else takes care of their shopping...

Second Creek is a wonderfully quirky place (their annual Miss Delta Floozie contest is a hoot, even though you can see the outcome of the "finale" coming a mile off!)& the characters are eccentric & likeable...Thanks for introducing me to their world PGO-Books4all I shall certainly be looking out for more in this series...at least I hope there will be more :o)

Read as part of the ULTIMATE CHALLENGE - themed "ANIMAL" read for June.

Thank you very much, plum-crazy, for this totally unexpected surprise which beat the postal strikes and landed on my doorstep this morning, thank you! That title really is eye-catching - and I look forward to meeting the dancing residents of Second Creek :-) However, with the current height of my TBR piles, I can't guess when that might be :-(
I'm a child of the 60s so, although I caught the tail end of the Jive/Rock n Roll, the Twist was the dance of my teenage years and I missed out on ballroom dancing. Nor have I had the time or the inclination to learn the skill since. It therefore seems particularly ironic that the book I've been devouring over the past couple of days also has a ballroom dancing motif, namely Dancing Backwards, the latest novel by one of my favourite modern authors, Salley Vickers. Perhaps somebody somewhere's trying to tell me something .... LOL!
Thanks again!

Well, that was all rather silly! I'm still slightly confused and don't know what to write about it. I couldn't properly appreciate the gentle stories of love and friendship, or the humour of events like the Miss Delta Floozie Contest, because I was bemused by the central motif of ballroom dancing in the local supermarket. Why? My imagination isn't surreal enough to accept such an improbable/impossible picture :-) With no faith in the underlying premise, the rest of the novel didn't make much sense to me either. I finished it - but I still don't believe it! What?
And I'm not even going to comment on how much I dislike the current fashion for including recipes in novels....
Thanks again, plum-crazy. That was an interesting experience!

Thanks for the books, Nu-Knees.

Lovely to see you , too.

Have just read your journal entry. Perhaps we should try ballroom dancing in Sainsbury's some time, just to get to grips with this premise?????????????

Am looking forward to reading it :)

We both enjoyed the book. We have lived in the southern USA so are familiar with PigglyWiggly stores, and couldn't resist the title! The characters tend to be sterotypes, and the plot is rather implausible, but it is a fun light read - Ideal for when you are travelling! We are now in South America, and left the book at a book exchange in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
