I got this book in the mail a couple of days ago at my home on Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

I like trying Jodi Picoult books because I find that there is always something to discuss about them. They are a sort of love it or hate it and they always have an issue that makes the reader think about various situations.

I'll try and get to reading this one eventually but my Mountain of TBR books is impossibly large and threatening to avalanche.

From the back cover:

What does it mean to be a good mother?
How far would you go in the name of love - and justice?

In the course of her everyday work, career-driven assistant district attorney Nina Frost prosecutes child molesters and works determinedly to ensure that a legal system with too many loopholes keeps these criminals behind bars. But when her own five-year-old son, Nathaniel, is traumatized by a sexual assault, Nina and her husband, Caleb, a quiet and methodical stone mason, are shattered, ripped apart by an enraging sense of helplessness in the face of a futile justice system that Nina knows all too well. In a heartbeat, Nina's absolute truths and convictions are turned upside down, and she hurtles toward a plan to exact her own justice for her son - no matter the consequence, whatever the sacrifice.

I like most of the Jodi Picoult books because they are very thought provoking and provide for god discussion. This one is no exception in that respect but I had a few problems with it. I was surprised that the mother took such drastic actions so soon in the trial. I felt like it would have been more realistic if she had waited a bit and it would have prevented a tragedy on the innocent. I also thought that the Glen/Gwynne connection was really far-fetched! We are really supposed to believe that a mother who's last name was Gwynne marries someone new and then names the next child Glen? And then in coincidence again they both become priests?

I don't want to put in rampant spoilers but I will say that I saw the truth about Father Gwynne's death long before the reveal at the end of the book. It was quite obvious and I am surprised that law enforcement did not uncover it and make some of the connections.

This book is like a roller coaster ride in the dark; full of twists and turns, ups and downs and never knowing for sure what is coming next. Best wishes to the next reader!

I found this book on the wishlist of Yinny who is a registered attendee of the 2010 BookCrossing Convention in Amsterdam. My hope is that I will see Yinny and be able to hand him/her this book in person as a wishlist surprise.
