It's every mother's nightmare...


Alice's baby is two weeks old when she leaves the house without her for the first time. On her eager return, she finds the front door open, and her husband asleep on their bed upstairs. She rushes into their baby's room and screams. 'This isn't our baby! Where's our baby?'.

Her increasingly hostile husband swears she must be either mad or lying, and the DNA test is going to take a week. One week later, before the test has been taken, Alice and the baby have disappeared. Run away, abducted, murdered?

The police who dismissed her baby swap story must find out, and as they do, they find dark incidents in David's past - like the murder of his ex-wife...

Quite an intriguing read about a mother facing an unbelievable horror...Alice comes home after a couple of hours away to find that the baby in the cot is a stranger she's never seen before but her husband David is insistent that the child is their daughter.
As Alice tries to make the police believe her, David's character also changes becoming more & more menacing as the days go on.
The story's told from the aspect of Alice & from that of the police investigating, whose tale is told at a time a week later than Alice's. This combination works well & gives the story a bit more interest. I enjoyed it but found the last few pages a little muddling & had to read them twice!

ETA 31.01.12 I did enjoy this book, everybody in it had problems to a varying degree so it was quite difficult to work out who was the bad man/woman!
