Mole and Rat become lost in a snowstorm after leaving the river bank to visit Badger in the Wild Wood.
Mole rediscovers the joys of home and with the help of Rattie entertains the Mousekin carolers and brings Christmas cheer to all.
Rat and Mole enjoy an afternoon outing on the river in this first chapter of "The Wind in the Willows."
The escapades of four animal friends living along a river in the English countryside--Toad, Mole, Rat, and Badger. Includes full-color illustrations.
The escapades of four animal friends who live along a river in the English countryside--Toad, Mole, Rat, and Badger.
This charming classic, first published in 1908, is set in an idyllic, fantasy Edwardian England, in which some animals can talk and interact with humans. The story chronicles the adventures of four friends who make their home in the lush countryside, the busy riverbank, and the mysterious woods: good-hearted Mole, clever Water Rat, the reclusive and wise Badger, and the reckless Toad, whose new obsession with motorcars has some very unfortunate consequences. Friendship, humor, and delightful writing combine to create an infinitely pleasurable reading experience for both children and adults.

5 out of 10

I've read this book now ... finished it yesterday. Unfortunately, I didn't like it much. Basically because of the characters and the basic concept. I did like the writing style - the language is good, rather charming. But that's not really enough to make this book worthwhile IMO.

What I didn't like about this book was ... as I said ... the basic concept. I fail entirely to see the appeal, or even the point, of having the main characters in this story be animals. It seems entirely pointless to make them animals and then ... not make them animals. They are so near to human that they practically are human. There are real humans in this story too, but it's rather confusing - at one point there is distance between the animals and the humans, as the Rat and the Mole stand outside in the snow watching the humans in their houses ... but then later the Toad gets in trouble for stealing from humans and ends up in a human jail. o_O It really makes no sense. The animal characters are so devoid of their species characteristics that the Toad can barely even swim ... and combs his hair ... ! Of course they all wear clothes, even down to shoes, apparently ... yet they have paws ... it's completely stupid. IMO Grahame has gone about this idea in a completely wrongheaded way. They should either have been animals - real animals - or they should just have been human and we could have had a nice story about some oddballs in the countryside getting into scrapes, without all these furnished badger dens and amphibians eating buttered rolls and who knows what all. >:-(

A good idea that the author has failed badly at carrying out. I was disappointed in this book which IMO doesn't deserve its status as a classic. Still, good to have read it, I guess, so that I can badmouth it with a clear conscience. ;-)

I'll release this book somewhere ... I have an idea, but I'll have to wait for better weather ... :-)

I will take this book with me to the BookCrossing meetup tomorrow; if no one takes it with them, I will leave it in the zone.

I've decided to scrap my original release idea, since better weather doesn't seem very likely. :-( Time for this book to move on. :-)
