Received in a trade yesterday from Pendleton Book Company, Pendleton, Oregon, USA.
Tolerable but only just. I usually love historical fiction and this one was pretty well-researched and had a potentially good plot line. However, the author botched the whole suspense thing, in my opinion---making it annoying rather than mysterious---not to mention fairly predictable. I would usually spend a day on a book this size with a decent plot, but this one ended up taking me almost a week! :( Disappointed...but maybe someone else will want to give it a go!

I took this out of the Not My Cup of Tea Bookbox.
A young woman of London society is widowed before she quite gets to know her husband. Her mourning is superficial until she starts to read his journal and to pursue his interests in antiquities and Greek mythology. She finds herself becoming increasingly interested in her husband and falling in love with him when it is too late. But is it too late? There are clues dropped that he may still be alive and ill in Africa! Our main character Emily is pursued by two others who are interested in marrying her when her mourning is over, but are these men both honest and honorable? It looks like there may be some thieving of original antiquities going on. Who is responsible?
This is a bit of a slow-moving, superficial book. It could easily be adapted for stage, it really doesn't have too many characters or settings. But I would have rated it one star higher if I had liked the ending.

I enjoyed this book after finally reading it this summer! (Took me long enough)
Tasha Alexander was one of the special guests at When Words Collide (www.whenwordscollide.org) in August - she was an excellent speaker, enthusiastic about the writing process, and truly one of the nicest people you could possibly meet. I will be reading more in this series.

I'm taking this book to the Calgary Bookcrossing monthly meeting at Cravings to find a new reader
:)
Enjoy!
:)
Enjoy!
Brought the book home from the Meetup.
At first I was annoyed by the slow pace of the story but I realized that it may have been the author's intent to reflect Emily's emotional maturation as a young widow. Emily at 19 has no personal goals; her only job is to find a rich husband to advance her family's social standing. To find financial freedom and personal freedom from her mother as a young widow takes some adjustment.
The complication of unsavory rumours of her husband's antiquity collections and the sudden interest by his close friends to help her sort the dead husband's affairs should have had Emily running to her Mama.
Instead Emily slowly reveals a backbone under her corset and a brain in her head.
I enjoyed the book and will look for the next installment in Emily's story.

Book taken to the Calgary BC Meetup today.
I pulled this off of Sing-song' shelf last Sunday so we could both enjoy an afternoon sitting on the deck in the sun with a book.
Taken to the October meeting!
