I just love reading Alice Hoffman! Her characters are wonderful and the stories grab at your heart. While this is a collection of short stories, they are more excerpts of a character's life at different stages. Wonderfully written, page turning, very enjoyable. Click the 'global overview' button for a book description! Love that feature!

I really enjoyed this book. I liked following along with Gretel and Jill as they grew up and experienced life. My favorite sentence was "...people will surely reveal what they're made of, if you only give them a chance. What's deep inside always surfaces, no matter how hidden."

I already have the address for Krista72 and will mail this off later today. Thanks dvg for starting this ray!

I liked this, but then I always like Hoffman's writing. Simple, yet profound. Well done.

My sincere apologies on keeping this so long. It will be off tmrrw to Maurean. :) Thanks for sharing!

Ohhh...Alice Hoffman!

I have a couple of rings I'm reading currently, but will get to this in short order, and journal when I'm through (thanks for sharing this one, dvg, I'm looking forward to it!)

Journal Entry 10 by Maurean from Atlantic Beach, Florida USA on Wednesday, July 1, 2009
good read - as is typical of Hoffman; this one is perhaps a bit more sad than most of her works (that I've read, anyway!), but definitely a worthwhile read.

Thanks again for sharing it, dvg, and as I have just rec'd Rrrcarons addy, I will send this along just as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 14 by EthlArnold on Wednesday, August 26, 2009
I'm just finishing moving, and picked this up from my PO box yesterday. Sorry for the delay! I'll be reading through and sending it soon!

Journal Entry 15 by EthlArnold on Saturday, September 5, 2009
The writing style was very enjoyable to me, but I didn't enjoy the tragedy very much. I felt saddened by what the characters went through, evidence of Hoffman's ability to make her characters come alive. Honestly I want more of a 'wrapped up' feeling or closure after reading, but this book didn't quite satisfy me in that area.

I'm PMing Rossella05 to send it off this week!

Wow, I'm delighted to receive this book. Thank you so much Rossella05. I am fairly new to this author but read The Probable Future recently and loved it so I am really looking forward to Local Girls. I know Alice Hoffman is very popular and I will RABCK this forward when I read it.

I really enjoyed Local Girls. Alice Hoffman is such a magical writer with the ability to really engage the reader with her characters. I always feel like I'm missing an old friend when I finish her books. Thank you Rossella05, for sharing this book with me. I am now going to pass it on as a surprise rabck to someone whom I know will enjoy it.

Amazon Editorial Review:
An exceptional collection of tender, beautifully told stories from the author of such remarkable novels as Here on Earth and Practical Magic.

The New York Times Book Review has noted, "Alice Hoffman writes quite wonderfully about the magic in our lives," and now she casts her spell over a Long Island neighborhood filled with dreamers and dreams. In a dazzling series of family portraits, Hoffman evokes the world of the Samuelsons, a family torn apart by tragedy and divorce in a world of bad judgment and fierce attachments, disappointments, and devotion.

With rich, pure prose Hoffman charts the always unexpected progress of Gretel Samuelson from the time Gretel is a young girl already acquainted with betrayal and grief, until she finally leaves home. Gretel's sly, funny, knowing perspective is at the heart of this collection as she navigates through loyalty and loss with the help of an unforgettable trio of women: her best friend, Jill, her romance-addicted cousin Margot, and her mother, Franny, whose spiritual journey affects them all. Told in alternating voices, these stories work wonders. Funny and lyrical, disturbing and healing, each is a lesson of survival, a reminder of the ties of blood and the power of friendship. Jane Smiley has said that "a reader is in good hands with Alice Hoffman," and once again in her expert hands, everyday life has been transformed into magic.

Just popped in to say that I started reading this book yesterday. It won't be long before it is finished, so watch this space for a review!

Journal Entry 23 by chamonix44 at Almelo, Overijssel Netherlands on Wednesday, November 17, 2010
I finished this book in the early hours of this morning, whilst waiting up for the cat to come home!! Some people wait up for their kids or spouses to get in, and I wait up for the cat, (since it was cold outside)! Anyway i finished it by 3am and there was no sign of our cat, and so I went to bed. My husband got up at 5am to go to work and he found her waiting patiently on the front door mat!

I enjoyed the book and I am giving it an 8 star rating. I thought Gretel was a nice girl and I felt sorry for her. I also felt really sorry for her dog! I would have liked to have had a more positive ending to the book though.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I am sending this book to mafarrimond.

I hope you will enjoy this book. It is on your wishlist. I am sending it as a very early birthday present, along with another wishlist book. Why early? Well in January this year, they changed the already rip-off expensive Dutch postal services and now we only have one, more expensive option to send packets. I just cannot afford it. So I decided to send your pressie whilst I am actually in the UK!!
