I loved this book. The author so skillfully intwined the story of Dewey the library cat with her own story and the story of the town. Amazing that one cat could touch so many lives worldwide - fantastic story!

Journal Entry 3 by BethanieKay from Fort Worth, Texas USA on Saturday, December 20, 2008
Borrowed this book from my friend Danielle and LOVED it. It's hard NOT to like a book about cats, since I'm such a huge kitty lover, but Dewey's story is truly a heartwarming tale. I always believe that our pets come into our lives at specific times for specific reasons, and it seems Dewey certainly fulfilled his destiny by making so many people happy. This story will make you cry at the end ... but the story is so worth it, you'll be glad you read it. Danielle and I both agree that this book is too good not to share, so I'm going to offer it up as a bookring, starting with my fellow kitty-loving sister and mother :)

>^..^< >^..^< >^..^< >^..^< >^..^< >^..^< >^..^< >^..^< >^..^< >^..^< >^..^< From the inside cover of the book: How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you hear the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa. Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director, Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility, (for a cat) and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most. As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state, and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming town pulling its way slowly back from the greatest crisis in its long history.

Journal Entry 12 by cbostler from Sandy, Utah USA on Friday, February 13, 2009
My decision to join this bookring was a random, spur-of-the-moment thing. I knew nothing at all about the book or about Dewey, "the small-town library cat who touched the world." The book provided a delightful, rewarding read. Thanks for sharing it with me, daniellechonody. I particularly enjoyed the fun lists the author includes..."Dewey's Likes and Dislikes" page 75; "The Daily Routine" page 155; and "Dewey's Job Description" page 203. The following lessons the author learned from Dewey touched me,too. "Find your place. Be happy with what you have. Treat everyone well. Live a good life. It isn't about material things, it's about love. And you can never anticipate love." page 270 I read the final pages feeling a deeper love and appreciation for the pets that have enriched my life. Thank you Flaps, Flurry, Kokomo, and Koby!

A sweet little book about an amazing cat. The author's love for Dewey rings out loud and clear from every page. This book is as much an autobiography of the author and an exposition on small-town America as it is a story about a cat. An enjoyable read.

Enjoyable. Dewey has a big heart and influences so many people, not just those in Spencer, Iowa (I thought Iowa was just one of those flyover states, but this book is nearly as much about Spencer and small towns as about Dewey). I can imagine the Japanese crew whom he is performing... (and so miss my own cats) I haven't met a library cat in the real life (yet) but there is a shop with a cat in Cork :) not as famous as Dewey but still someone nice to say hello when walking by. To LadySuse next - enjoy :)

I'd actually read the book by the time I got around to journalling it - it really helped during random baby-waking. [My cats used to do the same thing, Boontje is getting practice before even coming into the world.] Deweys story is truly heart-warming, but what really makes the book is the intersections with the authors life, which are inspiring in their own right, and her genuine love for the small town in which they live. I might even get a copy to pass on to our local library here in Cobh to encourage them to start by thinking big with a small cat >^._.^< Thanks for sharing - preparing to pass on this weekend.

Dewey is here at last!! Safe and sound. I will start reading in a few days.. and record my progress in this same journal. Thank you! =^..^= Started: 11/19/09 Finished: 12/10/09 This was such an endearing story. Reminded me of a cat that I had for 19 years. Plucked her from a litter of kittens when I was only 17 years old. Monique was her name, and she had so much adoration in her eyes. Always there when I needed her. Always had to touch me in some way, whether it was just a paw on my leg or napping on my lap. She was special and Dewey was no exception. I'm sure every cat lover can relate. Dewey's story is remarkable and will be remembered for many years to come. My favorite passage from this book is from one of the last pages: "Be happy with what you have. Treat everyone well. Live a good life. It isn't about material things; it's about love." What a great philosophy.

I loved this heart warming story. Being a life long cat owner I could relate to many of Dewey's antics and I liked how vicki's story was interwoven with Dewey's. My favorite passage is one mentioned in previous journal enteries from page 270 "Find your place. Be happy with what you have. Treat everyone well. Live a good life. It isn't about material things, it's about love. And you can never anticipate love." Thanks for sharing this wonderful book with me.

Posted to annenz today. The book touched me and once I started reading I couldn't stop. Usually I don't like to read such type of stories, but Dewey's story really is overwhelming. I was equally interested in Vicki Myron's life, which was not easy, and I appreciate her love and pride of her home state.

annenz sent me a text message on my birthday asking if I wanted to take part in this bookring.. as this book has been on my wishlist ever since I first heard about it I had to say yes. The book arrived at the perfect time yesterday as I checked my mail when I was taking my lunch break at work, I had forgotten to bring a book to read during my downtime so I eagerly started this one. I finished it early this morning and will be posting a JE with my thoughts later today.. I adored this book!

Definitely one of those 'can't put down books' and I have since recommended it to a few friends to check out, plan on buying my own copy sometime so I can loan it to people. Thanks for starting this bookring bethaniekay and I will send the book back soon (unless there is anyone else who is to be added to the bookring?)

Dewey has arrived back home in Texas! Thank you to all of you for making this a very successful bookring -- and my most traveled bookring thus far! Dewey has been traveling for nearly 3 years now, and he visited 21 different readers in 7 different countries. From the JEs, it sounds like he touched hearts all around the world :) Also, thanks to all of you who tucked a bookmark inside the book -- it arrived home with 4 bookmarks from different countries and a postcard - fun! I'll let Dewey have a rest on my shelf for a bit, then maybe I'll send him out to meet more readers :) Oh and as a cool coincidence -- today my sister, Moody-Blue, was driving across the state of Iowa and made a point to detour to Spencer, where visited Dewey's library. She saw the memorial to Dewey outside the library, and some library employees gave her a tour around the inside of the library where she got to see some of Dewey's favorite spots and other place that are mentioned in the book. Aww, so cool! :)
