Here is a small and handy Pocket Penguin book with 4 wonderful stories:

Seventeen Poisoned Englishmen
'I Only Came to Use the Phone'
The Woman Who Came at Six O'Clock
Light is Like Water

I have had a book for awhile and had a story at a time every now and then. Just when you need something good but small.

Garcia Marquez is always great for me. His stories are caught in a hazy Amazon swamp cigar smoky memory fog and hang there like ghosts...

His great novels are like long-lasting feasts, where you can eat only a couple of pages each day because it is so filling, full of odors and paintings, overwhelming in its richness of language.

These short stories then are like snacks, when a feast would be too much- just a taste of Garcia Marquez to whet your appetite and stimulate your fancy- always fascinating.

The only reason I didn't rate it higher was because it made me want to have rather a feast than a snack...

And not all of the stories are of the same calibre to me. 'I Only Came to Use the Phone' and Light is Like Water were the most memorable.

Enjoy!

Lovely black-humor-snacks. I'm afraid the I Only Came to Use the Phone now and then happens, one way or another... terrifying!

This little book has stayed by me a long time, as it travels with another ringbook (which has stayed by me a long time). Sorry about that. Fortunately, good stories never get old :)

These stories (except The Woman Who) have originally been published in the collection Strange Pilgrims (twelve stories, 1993). Hunting...

This was a quick read - I just couldn't stop once I started. I liked all the stories, but my favourite was the last one, Light is Like Water. 'I Only Came to Use the Phone' was really terrifying!

This was my first experience of Garcia Marquez in English, as I've only read his books in Finnish before. I must say that I prefer the Finnish translations. There was nothing wrong with the English translation (and of course I haven't read the same stories in Finnish, so I can't really compare), but somehow the stories seem to lose a part of their weirdness when read in English. Or maybe it's just me. I'd love to be able to read Garcia Marquez in Spanish one day...

I'll send the book to Australia as soon as I get tokorua's address.
