I really enjoyed Furnivall's first novel, The Russian Concubine so I was looking forward to reading this second novel. It certainly did not dissappoint. I was so engrossed in it that I stayed up until three in the morning reading and then woke up to finish it the next day. I feel that Furnivall creates characters that are so full of emotion and vitality that you live their lives along side them and really understand and feel what they are going through. For me it is the way that she is able to weave the sometimes contradictory elements of the communist way of life together to create a story that is full of both suspense and softness. Though I would have liked so see more of the changes the ending would have wrought in more detail.

Journal Entry 4 by PepeLePew from Sarajevo, Sarajevo Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday, February 21, 2009
Arrived safely today. I am currently reading another book (The Russian Concubine, actually), but I think I'll be able to start this one after the weekend. Thank you for sending it my way, teggers :)

I can now officially count myself as a Kate Furnivall fan :) Her books don't offer anything particularly new, but are written superbly, the stories are really interesting and the characters are very well written.
Some parts of this particular story were hard for me to swallow, but they didn't interfere with the rest of the story and they spoiled nothing. Great book and great new author whose books I'll eagerly await from now on. Thank you, teggers, for sharing :)
I'll mail the book soon.

It's here, thanks for sending it here, PepeLePew! It was a nice thing to come home to after a weekend away. :D
I just started another book so this will have to wait until I have finished it, but I don't expect it to take very long. I tremendously enjoyed "The Russian Concubine", so I can't wait to get started on this one!

I just finished reading this and liked it just as much as I expected I would. :D It's funny, there are so many things "wrong" with this book that I usually hate, like the plot that is all over the place, the use of some plot devices (like the gypsy's powers) that are completely unrealistic, the superficial characters, etc.. etc.. But it's such a gripping story and it's so well written, that you just can't stop reading! I really liked it as an insight into Russia in that time as well. I am fascinated by Russian history, which makes this book even more enjoyable. Thanks, teggers, for sharing this book!
(By the way, I just found out that a sequel to "The Russian Concubine" is set for release this Summer!)
I have contacted Tinina67 and will pass on the book as soon as I get her address.

I'm sorry, I didn't realise it'd been a while since I finished this book! I didn't mean to hold on to it this long, but it's on its way to Australia now.
Arrived today. It sits on top of my TBR. Thanks for sharing this. :-)
I enjoy reading historical novels (is this the right word?). A good read, I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say I am a fan now.
Will be send to the next on the list asap.

I loved this story! I'm now a fan of Kate Furnivall and am going to look for the Russian Concubine. Although some of the things that happened in this book were a little bit far fetched, I loved the story none the less. I'm looking forward to reading more just like it. Sending on to next reader....
