Based on a true story, The Perfect Storm describes the fatal final journey of the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing boat caught in a hurricane off the coast of New England in 1991. Better than the movie!

I chose this book from our "wrapped up" game where all I had to go on was the first line: One midwinter day off the coast of Massachusetts, the crew of a mackerel schooner spotted a bottle with a note in it.

I chose this book because we suspected that it was a popular current novel and several other people thought that they might have read it already. I have not read this book and so I will add it to my ever growing mountain of TBR.

From the back cover:

October 1991. It was "the perfect storm" - a tempest that may happen only once in a century - a nor-easter created by so rare a combination of factors that it could not possibly have been worse. Creating waves ten stories high and winds of 120 miles an hour, the storm whipped the sea to inconceivable levels few people on Earth have ever witnessed. Few, except the six-man crew of the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing boat tragically headed towards its hellish center.

I have seen most of the movie that bears the same title as this book and so I wanted to read the book to get the full story. There is a big difference in the non-fiction like text that is a bit technical and somewhat dry when you compare it to Hollywood and all of the special effects. Cast in George Clooney and a few other favorites and the movie becomes much different from the book.

I started to get fatigued while reading the book and I often wondered when it would get dramatic and I realized that was movie expectations coming through and that the book was not ever going to be like that. It is informative and sad and although I would not read it again I am glad that I read it the first time!

This is one of those that I would say read the book first!!!

I hope to release this book soon and I hope that it has interesting travels and gets a JE to tell us where it has gone!

All right, I'll admit it. I enjoy reading about natural disasters, whether earthquake, volcano, out-of-control climate change, or, in this case, the collision of two major storm systems on top of a fishing fleet.

"The Perfect Storm" is strictly non-fiction. Conversations are based on interviews with people after the event, and only speculation is offered as to the actions of those who didn't survive. The author goes into lots of detail about the structure of the storm and its effects on different kinds of boats and on those who brave the storm to rescue the people on those boats.

There is a small map in the front of the area, but I would have liked a bit more detail on it. Also, a drawing of a fishing boat with the parts marked would have been handy.

Picked up at the book buffet to release

**notes from the copy I read**

I decided to read this book after seeing the movie, which I quite enjoyed...the book is quite different. I enjoyed the book quite a lot, although it can only speculate on what actually happened to the Andrea Gail. And in fact it is more about how the other ships (and even some rescue helicopters/planes) handled the storm. What were the crew of the Andrea Gail thinking? All of that info is educatedly (based on interviews with others who had been in similar situations and survived) speculated.

In any case this was a very fast and entertaining read. There were many points where I was sitting on the edge of my seat as I read, worried for the people I will never meet. Beautifully told.
