Amazon.co.uk Product Description
Set in New England mainly and London partly, On Beauty concerns a pair of feuding families - the Belseys and the Kipps - and a clutch of doomed affairs. It puts low morals among high ideals and asks some searching questions about what life does to love. For the Belseys and the Kipps, the confusions - both personal and political - of our uncertain age are about to be brought close to home: right to the heart of family.

Thanks for the RABCK. Unfortunately, I received this book for Christmas and am therefore adding my comments from reading it in January.

Having read White Teeth with great enjoyment almost exactly one year ago I embarked on this one with great hopes. Thanks again to my NSS partner for this book from my wishlist.

I found that this book was much more difficult to engage with than White Teeth but was worth the effort in the end. The story bounces around both sides of the ocean with each of the families embroiled in their own family dramas and both so different in their views of life that clashing was inevitable both in the doomed affairs and in the strange relationship of Kiki and Carlene.
The inter-relationships were explored in an understandable way but somehow the manipulations of some of the characters felt a little more hollow than the previous book.

I am passing this copy on to another bookcrosser in a controlled release.

7 out of 10

Many thanks for sending the book, it arrived yesterday.

22nd March 09 - Just finished this book and really enjoyed it. I loved the fact that you get an idea of how each member of the family feels about the various situations they find themselves in, it goes to show that not everyone see things the same way. I am now looking forward to reading White Teeth (on Mt TBR) as most of the reviews I have read for this book, say how much better White Teeth is.

Will pass this on to frizzielizzie753 next time I see her.

6 out of 10

Read this book a little while back, the situations that the two different families find themselves in are quite revealing and interesting, would like to read more by this author as this is the first book I have read of hers.
