I love the Owen Archer mysteries so I was delighted to rescue this first one in the series from a charity shop to share with plum-crazy as a surprise Christmas RABCK. I don't think she's read any :-)
From the back cover: "It is the year of our Lord 1363. And in the cathedral city of York people are dying in mysterious circumstances. But there seems to be a common thread - the herbal remedies dispensed by Nicholas Wilton, Master Apothecary. The first victim is an anonymous pilgrim. But when a highborn nobleman dies after taking the same potion the authorities decide to act.
"Dispatched to York, in disguise, to unravel the mystery, Owen Archer, former Captain of Archers, apprentices himself to the Apothecary. But it is from Wilton's beautiful, spirited wife Lucie that he must learn the arcane secrets of the trade. Slowly but surely Owen begins to uncover the truth. And when the deaths continue he realises to his horror he must count Lucie among the suspects."
Intrigued? I hope so!

Although I've seen the Caedfael mysteries on TV & watched the film "The Name Of The Rose" countless times I think this is the first Medieval mystery I've ever read & I really enjoyed it.
I loved the fact that it's set in York & the characters were really easy to visualise - I found Owen Archer to be quite charismatic & look forward to tracking down some more of his adventures!
Thanks for introducing me to this intriguing "detective" Nu-knees, it's been a pleasure to read something different to my normal whodunnits.
Read as part of the 2009 ULTIMATE CHALLENGE ("GARDEN" themed read for March - ROSE)

Couldn't resist this. Thank you Plum-Crazy. Nice bookmark too!
Wow! Really enjoyed this! Looks like I've found another author to add to my list.
This is the second York based novel I've read in the last six weeks. Looks as if my next York themed book will have to be C. J. Sansom's "Sovereign.

Thank you, this looks like it will be right up my street! It may take me a while to get to it as my TBR pile is taking over the house.
Thanks too for the lovely Christmas card, have a very happy Christmas :-)
