Finally got round to reading it. I'm sure Ishiguro could write about the recession or heart surgery and I would still enjoy reading about it. The style is quite sparing in this one, but there is lots of insight into the characters and it's all very believable.

Arrived in the mail yesterday. Thanks so much jaynereader! I'm really looking forward to reading this. I agree with what you said about Ishiguro, he could write about anything and I'd still love reading it.

Another beautiful book by Ishiguro. I love that these books stimulate you while you read. Even more so if you've read books by him before. I keep on getting stuck in them, just turning the pages to find out what the inevitable twist is going to be.

This book is different from the others I have read by Ishiguro in that it really leaves the reader confused as to what really happened there with Sachiko and Etsuko, I'm not writing any more because I don't want to spoil anything for future readers, but those who have read this book will know what I mean. I actually ended up reading theories around the book after finishing this one to find some clarity. I didn't find the confusion annoying, however, I think that is just one thing one has to count on reading Ishiguro's books. There is supposed to be some confusion and a certain room for interpretation.

Anyhow, beautifully written, as always. I really enjoyed reading it. Thanks for sharing!

I know there are quite a few interpretations, but for me it is a psychological novel about a mother trying to come to terms with her daughter’s suicide. It’s so full of tiny details one can easily overlook, it is tender and disturbing at the same time. Even the characters in the background are drawn well, they bring up a few more topics that the novel deals with such as the father-son relationship or the changes in Japanese society (especially regarding the role of women). I love the enigmatic narrative style and the languid pace, the melancholia, the understatement. Things are left open in the end, questions remain – I appreciate this, it made me think more about the story. The reader can choose how to interpret Etsuko’s haunting world. A masterpiece.

One of those enigmatic books that everyone will read differently. So much is left unsaid that it is remarkable that Kazuo Ishiguro actually makes it work as a novel.

Thanks again for sharing it.

As previous journallers have said, this book is confusing, but deliberately so. I couldn't decide on my interpretation, but enjoyed it nonetheless. Perhaps I will return to it in a few years time and make up my mind what *I* think happened.
