'Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer star as old flames Jean Pargetter and Lionel Hardcastle.
Their love story was all set for a happy ending in the 1950s when Jean was a student nurse and Lionel, a young army officer. But he was posted abroad and they lost touch.
Thirty-eight years later, Lionel has returned to London to publish he his autobiography and, through a strange coincedence, he is reunited with Jean who has set up a secretarial agency.
Now specially adapted in six episodes for BBC Radio 2, this hugely popular BBC1 bittersweet comedy about the reunited lovers asks the burning question: 'Can the flame of passion still flicker in middle age?'
BBC Worldwide 1996
Side 1: Second Time Around/Another Time, Another Place
Side 2: Another Time, Another Place (cont'd)/Time To Go Travelling
Side 3: Time for a Change/Marking Time
Side 4: Marking Time (cont'd)/Just in Time
Jean - Judi Dench
Lionel - Geoffrey Palmer
Judith - Moira Brooker
Alistair - Jon Glover
Sandy - Jenny Funnell
The Master - John Barron
Denise - Jean Warren
Stephen - Paul Chapman
Penny - Moyra Fraser
with Simon Greenall, Melanie Hudson, Gillian Martell.
Produced by Martin Fisher.'
Found for £2.99 in St. Neots' branch of Oxfam.
Different cover.
Aw - I love this series! Dame Judi is a national treasure and Geoffrey Palmer the perfect foil for her, even though he looks and makes Lionel sound like a lugubrious camel! I think the tv programme ran for something like 7 or 8 seasons with a couple of specials thrown in afterwards, but I don't think I heard these episodes when they were broadcast, so its nice to have found this two tape edition lurking on a charity shop's shelves :)

Started listening to this week, bumped up to the top of my To Be Listened To listing :)
Really good, just like the tv series, even though the original Alistair couldn't make it for these recordings, his substitute is fine.
It's a pity the BBC didn't do any more of these because they are a good listen. I intend to finish listening to these tonight :)
Maybe ring material?

Finally listened to the last 5-10 minutes last night at my parent's house. I really do love this series, and enjoyed these six adapted for radio episodes as much as the tv series. As I have seen the series - which now seems to run semi-permanently on cable here in the UK (yay!) - so many times, I could visualise the two main characters talking and dancing around each other. The only shame was that the original Alistair has been recast, I wonder why?
Keeping in my PC for now, but possibly ring material...

Off as a RABCK to Chamonix44 in the Netherlands. Enjoy!
I went to the gym this morning even though the weather was really hot today, and the air conditioning in that small gym never works! So I came home exhausted, hot and sweaty! I had a shower, and prepared lunch for myself and my partner. After lunch he went off to work and I did general housework and hung out the washing on the line. I was so tired by that time, that I decided to go upstairs and lie on the bed to relax. I got out my small cassette player and put in the first tape of As Time Goes By.
Did I say I wanted to relax? Big mistake choosing ATGB. I could not relax one little bit. It was so very funny, and I was laughing so much at the very clever humour! So when the first side was finished, I just had to play the second side! Wow! This audio book is great! I really love it.
That's the first tape listened to.
I'll journal again after I have listened to the second cassette. I don't think this will be a once-only experience for me. I think I will just have to listen to it all again in the future!

I listened to these two cassette tapes once again. It was just as enjoyable the second time around. I am now passing them on to KJSkye as she needs to rest a lot these days and she loves audio books!

Thank you chamonix44 for this audio book. I never watched this series on the TV, so it will be new to me.
I sat down this evening intending to listen to half an hour of the first tape of this audio book. It was so humorous that I just kept on listening to it. I didn't want to stop it. I was curious to know what would happen next. I ended up listening to the whole audio book. It was great! I might listen to it all again before I pass it on to someone else, who knows?!!

First, I can't believe I won. Second, I can't wait to listen to all of my new-to-me audiobooks! Thank you, KJSkye, for this and the lovely assortment of postcards! I love both British humour and Judi Dench, so these should be quite enjoyable.
These two tapes made the grueling and monotonous task of yard work go by quite enjoyably, though my neighbors may have thought I was crazy when they saw me laughing out loud while mowing the lawn! The writing was clever and the performances were all I could have asked for. I hope the next "reader" enjoys this as much as I did.
On its way to the winner of the July/August 2010 edition of the International AUDIOBOOK Sweepstakes RABCK. Enjoy!
Received in the mail with two other audiobooks and a pile of Bookcrossing goodies! Your generosity is over-whelming! Thank you so much. Reading the other journal entries makes me really look forward to listening to this one!
Very enjoyable! Thanks for sharing this set with me.
