I found this fair-condition trade paperback at a neighborhood yard sale, and thought it looked interesting. [It's inscribed by a previous owner: "Rich, Live & love fiercely! Tim"]

Later: The book's a collection of biographical essays covering Miller's youth through his increasing involvement with gay activism, each chapter illustrated with a photo. His tone blends humor-with-attitude and some rather frightening situations, such as when he gets sidetracked by a cult of Moonies on his first trip to San Francisco, and only makes his escape after fending them off with a copy of Howl. Later he develops a successful career crafting built-in beds for loft-dwellers in New York: "One loft bed I craftily hung from the ceiling by chains attached to meat hooks in a bedroom painted slate gray. This bold design became very popular on certain streets in the West Village and Chelsea."

There are darker moments, of course. At one point Miller describes having a too-real breakup fight with his boyfriend and stage partner during a performance piece. And the AIDS epidemic began to affect his friends and lovers at about the same time, changing things forever. But Miller keeps on, and by the end of the book is not only loving again but has two men in his life - not that this goes smoothly all the time, but then, few relationships do!

The book closes with Miller going over the contents of a laundry basket - his life as memorialized by a variety of shirts, gifts from friends and lovers over the years. "It all comes out in the wash. That's why I was folding the laundry. I like doing this for men I love."
