I'm not sure about this book. I felt the need to keep reading to find out how the story progressed but I didn't feel connected to it as I do with books that I really enjoy.
I felt that the author used far more words than were necessary but I realise that some people would say the 'wordiness' of it is what makes it a good book. For me it just distracted from a fairly good story.
But, that's another 1001 book read and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it, so thank you to lucy-lemon for starting the ring.
I hope to get it in the post this week.

I finished this book last night - thanks to lucy-lemon for the opportunity to read it and for Caroley to passing it on to me.
I found it a frustrating book, I wanted to know more about Norah and more about what was going on with her. Having thought about it, that was perhaps the author's intention - to make the reader feel as Reta, the mother, is feeling. A clever tactic but not one that encourages me to try out more of her books.
I am posting to bestfriends today.

I finished reading today.
Being a mother of three daughters myself, I could identify with the narrator and the difficulties she encounters with her eldest. The story has several other layers though and some of them are harder to understand, at least for me. Her problems as a woman writer for instance and the feminist issues. Very thought provoking though. I think I will need to let those sink in a bit. I liked the style of writing, although I found it a little boring too sometimes. The end is somewhat sudden and unsatisfactory for my taste. On the whole I enjoyed it and will rate 8 out of 10. Thanks for sharing.
I have joined dozens of rings and rays and this is the first time ever, I did not find a shippinglist in a JE of the book! It's much more practical for the participants if it is to be found there! Now I had to search the forum for the thread in which I joined this ring to find the shipping order!!!!
I have PM-ed the next on the list for her address.

Received the book today. I read Mary Swann for a university course years ago and really enjoyed it so I'm looking forward to reading this one and will start as soon as I finish my current read. Thanks a lot!
And thanks for the nice postcard, bestfriends! :-)

I really enjoyed reading this book though maybe not quite as much as Mary Swann. Definitely have to read some more books by Carol Shields because I just love her style of writing, her topics, and her ironic asides. Well, I wasn't totally satisfied with the conclusion at first because I had been hoping for a more complex reason for Norah's behaviour - or maybe no explanation at all - instead of the explanation given. Also, the ending was just a little too optimistic for my taste. But looking at Reta's struggle with her editor about the ending of her second novel I suspect that this reaction might have just as well been intended by the author. ;-)
Thank you for this bookring! The book will continue its journey soon (thanks for posting that link, bestfriends!).

Received the book last Saturday, thanks!
(will start to read it soon)
3 weeks later:
A disappointing book for me. There were certainly some parts that I enjoyed – good writing, interesting thoughts, amusing here and there (the letters were probably the best part of the book) but it did not feel consistent and a great deal could simply have been left out. Unless… the author would have concentrated on just one or two subjects and explored them to the full – now I kept waiting for her to get back to the story line and got bored in the meantime. The end left me unsatisfied. Thanks for sharing it anyway!
Will send it to the next on the list

Thanks for sharing this book. I enjoyed it. I really liked the irony of an author writing about an author who is writing about an author - and the character's comments about that!! Coming from a family with mental health issues, I found it very touching in parts - how the family quietly showed support without pushing. I really connected with that part; you want to know they are OK but don't want to push them away by forcing your presence.
On it's way to Kayjay33!!

Thanks Deereads for the book that arrived in my mailbox today, and thanks to all the others who have kept it moving along.
I appear to be the last one so will be able to finish my current book before I begin this one.

I really didn't like this book as much as I expected to.It just seemed to drone along with very little happening to keep my interest. The ending was abrupt. It was almost as though the author got bored with the whole thing and brought it to a quick conclusion.
Thank you just the same Lucy-Lemon for giving me the opportunity to read a book by a Canadian author.

Kayjay33 handed me this book to read when I came for a visit.
Thanks kayjay for passing this book on to me. Also thanks to lucy-lemon who started it on its way across the world. I have just finished reading a book called "White" and the town of Llandudno is mentioned in it.
By the way, I loved my visit to Wales a few years ago.
Back to the book, it certainly wasn't what I was expecting, of course expectations lead to disappointments at times. I found it a bit tedious at times, and admit to skimming over some of the details. I also found the authors use of fancy words far over my head at times, almost got out the dictionary. But it was a clever story with lots of thought provoking ideas.
I hope to turn this book loose tomorrow perhaps in Ste.Rose DuLac MB and hope someone finds it and journals it.
