9 out of 10

I've just got to the end of this book and I've enjoyed it so much. It was a light and easy read ... and here I emerge rather reluctantly from 1946 and 6 weeks on the HMS Victorious, the air-craft carrier, that brought about 655 war-brides from Australia to the UK. To me, the characters were quite believable and now find myself wondering about the real people who made that journey all those years ago .... for though this book is fictitious, it is based on a true story as that journey actually did happen. They were so brave to leave their friends and family to start a new life in a new place with a person they had only been with for such a short time. I am also thinking about the others who served on board the ship and what they must have gone through during the war.....and their whole reaction to having the women on board on the trip back. This was a very interesting read.

I went looking for more information and thiswas one interesting site that I found. (There is more!)

Thank you so much house-elfdobby for sending this to me. It's been hard for me to put it down. I feel quite lost right now..... I am not ready to tackle Mt TBR, yet .... for I've been quite happy on this ship.

Adding a few more comments just before I send this book on to meet it's wonderful new friend. It was interesting to read the author's acknowledgements as she mentions the background reading she did before writing the book. Also.... yes, her grandmother's name Betty McKee is on the list of war brides that travelled on board the ship (...found on the link posted above). I also found this link a clip of her introducing the book to us.

Thanks again house-elfdobby for spoiling me with this lovely book. I enjoyed it so much. It will be travelling on it's way in a little while. (It might take longer than it usually does to reach it's destination as postal delivery is slow due to flooding in the area.) I'll be looking forward to hearing what it's new friend thinks of it. Enjoy! :)

This lovely book arrived today, much quicker than expected. With the roads into Darwin cut by flooding mail is being flown in.

I loved the bookmark too.

Thankyou for this wonderful RABCK.

I loved everything about this enthralling story. It is a well researched, fascinating story based on fact.

I will be looking for more Jojo Moyes books.

Thankyou for the RABCK Carole88 and for introducing to me a new author.
