Great book, panders perfectly to my love to chocolate and dislike of religion. This is a spare copy bought at a school fair as mine is too good to give away.

I really loved this book . It is a real slow burner not usually something I like, but in this case I do . It tells the story of Vianne , who moves with her daughter to a small French backwater town . She opens a chocolate shop opposite the towns' church which the priest takes as a personal attack on him . Maybe because it's lent, or maybe because he's a sour face busybody ,he tries everything in his power to try and run her out of town . Personally I think he doesn't like to see people having fun ( no priest I've ever met does ) He seems to think his flock , as he calls them , should be beratting themselves for being so full of sin , not being happy and eating chocolate . It is funny he calls them his flock as the sheep reference is too easy . Sheep are stupid and follow each other even over the edge of cliffs . They also will pick on another animal if the lead sheep (priest) tells them to.
As Vianne gets more intwined with the townsfolk he finds it harder to turm them against her . When she helps some river gypsies and takes in a battered wife and helps her find her feet the husband and the priest try to gang up on her , but she is smarter than them both and easily defeats them . She also gets friendly with an old woman in the town, Aramande who seems to know everything. She says she is a witch and Vianne seems to dabble abit with cards and candles , but the references to it are very subtle and almost part her of everyday life .
I enjoyed it very much and I hope the film is as good .
