Early 1970s Scholastic paperback, with a $2.25 cover price. This is the 1876 novel that introduced Tom, Huck Finn, Becky Thatcher and others, in the American South of the 1840s on the Mississippi River. This humorous novel is more of a children's book than the later masterpiece about Huck Finn's continuing adventures. Unlike in Finn, in Sawyer the author largely avoids the big Southern societal pre-War issues, and concentrates instead mostly on childhood imaginations and the kids' unlikely intrigues. Even though the author wryly asserts that the events were mostly true, more or less. I found this a couple months ago in the free books pile on the porch of the Dimond Library. A good, quick read.
