A very interesting book. This is an autobiographical account of Maya's life from the age of three to sixteen and follows the struggles she faces in her earliest years, it's a wonderfully written book with some very funny descriptive moments. I'd definitely read the subsequent volumes of Angelou's autobiography even though they're not on the 1001 list.

Thanks Caroley for sharing this book with me, I'll pass this on the KT-J to read shortly.

NEXT UP: Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons - Watchmen & David Foster Wallace - Infinite Jest

9 out of 10

Well I haven't quite finished Lanark but I went away for a week so this was easier to carry! I loved this book, I thought it was really interesting and found I read it really quickly. Maya Angelou's life is fascinating, from her time growing up in the deep south with her grandmother and uncle to her visits to her parents and the adjustments her and her brother had to make. Also the descriptions of the era and the social history, the legacy of slavery and the relationships between the blacks and the whites in the towns. I felt desperately sorry for what she had to go through at times but found her spirit and the humour and warmth that ran through the story amazing.

I definitely want to read the sequels at some point as she has clearly led an extroadinary life.

I have PMd davemurray101 for an address and will get this posted on as soon as I receive it.

Thanks Caroley for a great 1001 book!

Edit 10/2/09: Apologies for not editing earlier but this was posted on Saturday (7/2/09) to davemurray101. Enjoy!

Recieved in the post today. Really looking forward to this one. Thanks to Caroley for starting the bookray and to Stubee and Kt-j (and additional thanks for the postcard). Next on the TBR pile.
19/02 - A really good (semi?) autobiographical novel. Starts with the sensual feast about growing up in the South - who knew tinned pineapple could be made enticing. After a reasonable childhood in Arkansas, she moves back with her mother and experiences a world-shattering event- which she spends the rest of her childhood recovering. Of the African-American literature I have read, I would not say it is as good as Nella Larsen's 'Passing' or Richard Wright's book, but well worth an appearance in the 1001 books.

Caught!
Thanks for sending it on Tinina67.
I think it will take me about another week with the current bookring and then I'll be into this one, thanks.

Read 16-18 March. Pages 281.
Wow, I dont read many memoirs/autobiographies but this one really is special. It has all the trademarks of a great autobiography, overcoming adversity, experiencing joy, told expertly and with insight. The Joy of reading classics and poetry helps her throughout her young life, especially to feel confident in using her voice again.
I read about her later life on Wikipedia and apparently she was employed by both Malcom X and Martin Luther King before their assassination.
This book is also one of the most frequently banned books from highschools in the US. As a coming of age story I think it is criminal that it has ever been banned in highschools. But then banning books in general is criminal to my mind ;-)

Thanks for the bookring Caroley.
I to would like to read the follow-ups. If I find them, there'll be another bookring in the offering :-)
It is just amazing the gems that are on the 1001 list. If Passing is better than this I cant wait to read that one.
I've PMed Mozette to let her know the book is on the way and her address is on her profile page, so the "Singing caged bird" will be on its way again soon :-)

ETA It is apparently the 40th anniversary this year of the publishing of this book. There is a radio discussion online at http://wamu.org/programs/dr/09/03/18.php, if anyone is interested. I think the discussion contains some spoilers.

G'day from Australia! Yep, it arrived in sunny Queensland today... and it's definitely a beautiful day here.

It seems that all the bookrings I signed up for have been coming thick'n'fast in the last few weeks or so. Luckily, there are a few that I just can't get into... and when this one arrived, (which I've been looking forward to)I was preparing another to post off. So, after I've finished off 'Tuesdays With Morrie', I'll begin this one.

Thank you, Caroley for including me on this bookray... I've been looking forward to reading this one for a long time.

It was an easy read but found myself wondering why it is one of the 1001 books to read before you die! It was bitty and rushed in places and I found myself wondering how something as important as a teenage pregnancy in the 40's / 50's could possibly be written about in 5 pages at the very end of the book.

Nevertheless, I shall pass it on to Brunton11.

I finally picked up this book after reading Alice Seebold’s ‘Lucky,’ in which the author also describes her rape. I am not a huge fan of biographies and memoirs but I enjoyed this one as it almost felt like I was reading a piece of fiction. Maya Angelou writes beautifully and engaged me with vivid descriptions of her childhood. I particularly liked the portrayal of Stamps and the simplicity of life depicted there.

At fewer than 300 pages, this was a quick and absorbing read. I definitely would not say no to reading more of the author’s work in the future.

P.S. I go crazy in the coconut for pineapple too!

There was nothing really bad about the book as such but I just found it a bit too detailed and that became boring. There is a great chapter in it about a woman at church attacking the preacher and it is so funny! However the rest of the book had detailed accounts of every day of her life and a lot of it was dull with a few interesting events mixed up in between it. If you don't mind a slow read you'll probably enjoy this but it was just too slow for me to enjoy.
