Journal Entry 1 by 300dogs from Jackson, New Jersey USA on Saturday, November 22, 2008
Hi and welcome to the Judge A Book By It's Cover Bookbox! Please choose a book based on the description of the front cover. Pick a few if you like, just replace the number you take out. Then wrap it, tag it and mail it on to the next participant. Please make a journal entry telling us what book you chose by sharing with us the description of the front cover and then naming the title. This will be the only time that titles are revealed. Next, list what you have added to the box by describing the cover. Please do not list the name of the book(s) you add, only what is on the cover. The only time a title should be mentioned is when you have chosen one. Let's have fun and for the first time, judge a book by it's cover! Here is the mailing order: indygo88 (Indiana) princess-peapod (California) Knikkki (California) sweetsangria (Oregon) gomboggit (Oregon) dabercro (Utah) firepal (Texas) nuttyreader (Texas) debnance (Texas) Maurean (Florida) flossie771 (Georgia) kaila-ann (South Carolina) Mikavr (North Carolina) suzannecanread (Pennsylvania) awakeagain (New Jersey) imawinn2 (Wisconsin) liasophiadotcom (Wisconsin) teeney (Illinois) lost at post office time-traveler (New York) kerbam1421 (Maryland) elizardbreath (Oregon) k00kaburra (California) sarkiegirl (California) innae (Colorado) heartthumper (Kansas) svoight (Tennessee) ashleyosbcam (Alabama) 300dogs (New Jersey) <---it's home! Journal Entry 4 by indygo88 from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Sunday, November 30, 2008
Never fear...the box has arrived at its first destination! However, it got roughened up along the way -- there's a dented hole in the side of the box & the wrappings on quite a few of the books have small rips/tears. I'm going to perform some tape surgery on them (without peeking, if at all possible), & probably replace the box with a smaller one so that they don't rumble around so much in transport. I'll journal again with my choices! :')

Journal Entry 5 by indygo88 from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Tuesday, December 02, 2008
Gee, it was really hard to decide what to pick. Oh the pressure, the pressure.... :') I went with three of them. I took: *A couple drinking coffee in a diner. (Empire Falls - Richard Russo) *Sailboat on the ocean with storm clouds above. (Still Summer - Jacquelyn Mitchard) *Gloria Vanderbilt's son. (Dispatches from the Edge - Anderson Cooper; Was I the only one who didn't know Anderson Cooper was Gloria Vanderbilt's son??) And here's what I'm putting in: *An armless statue, the Eiffel Tower, the leaning Tower of Pisa, a windmill, & a stein. *Woman in a red, off-the-shoulder dress w/ her head slung back. *A kitchen utensil, an orange, dried flowers, a hand grenade, a shotgun shell, & a rock. Note: Please judge my books by their descriptions, not the ugly wrapping paper I used! LOL! This was a really fun box, 300dogs! I know there are a lot of participants after me, so I hope the box makes it safely to all destinations so that you can have a nice variety when it comes back to you! The books are now in a smaller box & I'll be taking them to the post office tomorrow. 12/3/08 -- Mailed today. DC #: 0307 0020 0003 7551 5592

It's like trying to guess Xmas gifts! Very fun. I'm taking: A kitchen utensil, an orange, dried flowers, a hand grenade, a shotgun shell, & a rock - The Five Quarters of the Orange (which is one of the few Harris books I haven't read, so it was a perfect choice) A Ringmaster Entering a Tent - Water for Elephants (which I knew, and I have read it, so I picked it to send to a friend.) and how could I resist Pink Bunny Slippers??? - Good Grief by Lolly Winston, which may not be my kind of book, but I'm going to give it a go. It takes place in Ashland, OR where my family lives, so if it's not for me, I can definitely pass it along. I'm sending out: A pig wearing a blue cap A blonde woman wearing an off the shoulder red dress, a 40's hairstyle and a vacant stare A cat and a cello very fun! Thanks for the inclusion. Journal Entry 24 by Maurean from Atlantic Beach, Florida USA on Saturday, March 14, 2009
Ohhhh...this arrived here at the beach today, and I canNOT wait to "read" the covers! What a fun idea for a box, 300dogs (cute pups, BTW!), and thank you for including me in it...now, what to choose? what to choose?! Okay, here's what I've "uncovered": ~ The animated condiment server w/ skull & cross bones on them: "Killer Pancakes" by Diane Mott Davidson (one from a stalled book spiral that I joined and never got a chance to read..good grab!) ~ A red car in the woods with a woman inside: "Shakespeare's Trollop" by Charlaine Harris (a favorite author of mine; unfortunately, I've already read this one. A good read, I will move along in some BXing fashion) ~ An old fashioned open kitchen cabinet containing dishes, a teapot, mugs, and pots & pans: "The Full Cupboard of Life" By Alexander McCall Smith (I have read only "The #1 Ladies Detective Agency" in this series, so perhaps I will check in on Mma Ramotswe again...) ~ A plant w/a wrench emerging out of the greenery: "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert Pirsig (one my other half is wanting to read, so another good grab!) ~ A large knife, a small igloo and a dog: "The Shaman's Knife" by Scott Young (I was actually "expecting" this to be a Hillerman title, but this is an unknown to me author, yet seemingly the same genre; looks interesting...) ~ President's Limo, war protesters, the Capitol Bldg. in the background: "Home Front" by Patti Davis (The author is the daughter of Ronald & Nancy Reagan; another interesting looking one) Well, 5/6 that I've yet to read - that's a pretty good take, I'd say!! Now, what shall we put IN the box?! ... ~ A Burning Cross ~ Building front on fire, w/ woman's silhouette in the window ~ Aerial view of a tropical island w/ a motor boat heading away from the shore ~ night view of an old storefront, gas pump, and a sedan idling next to it w/ its lights on ~ Police tape entwined with ivy; gravestone epitaph ~ An ancient, broken gold disc w/ hieroglyphs carved on it SO, now I'm off to wrap these up, and get the addy for the next in line... 3/19 *this is now on its way to Flossie771 - have fun! I did!!

Journal Entry 33 by imawinn2 from Neenah, Wisconsin USA on Monday, June 29, 2009
liasophiadotcom came over last night and we dug through the box. We had lots of laughs as we sorted through the books. We were like a couple of kids checking out their Christmas presents. Anyway, here is what I picked and put back. My picks: *Jaws, woman's face, two men side by side -- Touch Not the Cat by Mary Stewart *A Burning Cross -- Southern Cross by Stephen Greenleaf *An astronaut's helmet with a rocket taking off reflected inside -- Space by James A. Michener *A woman's legs wearing pink bunny slippers -- Good Grief by Lolly Winston (the description sounded too funny to let it go. I promised liasophiadotcom that I would share it with her) Finally... (and I was dared to take this one) *The author pictured in the center with pornographic ads all around the sides of the cover -- What's Not to Love?: The Adventures of a Mildly Perverted Young Writer -- by Jonathan Ames I added to the box: *A hand axe with a backdrop of trees and leaves, a wolf howling in the lower corner. *A man wearing a black stocking hat, windbreaker and pants leaning over and holding down a woman in a white nightgown. *A woman in a long red dress wearing a white hat and carrying a basket while standing next to a tall brick wall. *An old bearded man gazing. A small stand of pine trees in the lower corner. *A wedding dress with multicolored dots, silver vines and butterflies across the cover. liasophiadotcom has her books and will post her picks and giveaways. Then we will send the box on to the next person. Thanks so much for the fun and giggles. Hopefully we can do this again.

Oh this was such a hoot. I have never done anything like this before and boy did we laugh. I'm still waiting on the lemonade though ;) Through careful selection here are the books that I choose: 1). A woman standing by a body of water wearing a sweater and looking up towards the cloud-filled sky (A Sundog Moment by Sharon Baldacci) 2). Geometric squares of color (Wouldn't Take Nothing For My Journey Now by Maya Angelo 3). Various Food Items roughly shaped like a heart (Whole Hearted Cooking, the complete low cholesterol cookbook by Beth Hallinan. I have very low cholesterol so I'll be passing this one on to someone who could use it more than me). 4). A white porch with a white wicker table and chair; there is a hat and flowers on the chair (A Women Next Door by Barbara Delinsky) 5). The back of a van with chickens visible through the rear window. I couldn't pass this one by based on the cover. (The Mobile Library, The Case of the Missing Books by Ian Sansom). I recently went on a cruise so these next two were a must! 6). A cabin cruiser at sea (Cold As Ice by Anne Stuart) This last one is one imawinn plan on sharing and had a good laugh over the title. We decided this would be a good idea for something to do. 7). Two ladies on a cruise ship wearing sombreros (Sisterchicks in Sombreros by Robin Jones Gunn) I've already dug into this book and almost done. I love exploring new authors out of my comfort zone. So I'm looking forward to reading them all. Thank you for including me in and here are my 7 I'm adding to the pile. Here is what I added to the box: 1. A lady standing reading a book with black birds flying around her head. 2. A young girl wearing a red sweater sitting in front of a window. 3. A Flower shop with flowers outside the shop along with a street lamp 4. Butterflies. tree, secluded lake with a couple about to exchange a dainty kiss. 5. 2 girls pulling a Radio Flyer red wagon with a Christmas tree adorned with a big read bow 6. One top heavy woman wearing a tight shiny green leather dress with pink gloves in 6 different poses 7. A couple leaving the woods, hiding in the woods? over looking at a Cathedral being struck by lightning There you have it. Have fun and I'll be on my way over to imawinn's house to add these to the box, move it on to then next lucky one, and maybe get in on some of the lemonade afterall:)

I have to make a change to a book I was planning on adding to the box. #1). a lady standing reading a book with black birds flying around her to be replaced with the new #1) a very colorful cover with pretty roses and petals overlaying a blue background. Sorry for the confusion. A certain family member was not happy with me setting the original #1 book out into the wild and wanted to keep it.

Journal Entry 37 by teeney from Nashville, Illinois USA on Wednesday, August 05, 2009
Uh-oh! I mailed the box out last week, and the P.O. Lost it! They sent me a letter explaining it is missing, and they returned all the labels from the box. My address, the address I was sending it to, 300dogs address and the tracking label. I need everone to e-mail me the title and author of any books you put in. If you can remember any details about the wrapping or covers, add those too. I would not ask this if it weren't the only way to possibly rescue these books. Otherwise, they will be considered lost in the mail and will go with other lost items. I'm filling out a form and hopefully they will find them. Thanks! Teeney

Journal Entry 38 by 300dogs from Jackson, New Jersey USA on Thursday, August 06, 2009
Hi everyone, By now I'm sure you read the entry from teeney saying that the Judge A Book By It's Cover bookbox got lost in the mail. Even with delivery confirmation. It's a bummer. Oh well. I came up with an idea to continue the bookbox since there are still many more BC'ers waiting for it. I have loads of books due to a recent library booksale so I have plenty to restart the box with. I thought if anyone wants to mail me a book to two to include in the updated box, please feel free to do so. Just pm me and I will send out my address. I thought this way, everyone can still have some books/interest in the box and all future journal entries wouldn't just be all about my books and the ones that get added from here on out. Please reply to me either way so I know who does want to add some and who does not. I will use the same BCID # and can hopefully get this going relatively quickly. Thanks all for your understanding. I have been in constant touch with teeney and she feels bad about this but sometimes, things just happend, and it wasn't her fault. I know it's a pain to look up the books everyone has entered and the choice is all up to you as to whether or not you want to do so. Again, let me know if anyone wants to add a book or two to the updated bookbox. It won't be a "round two", just another box of books to judge by their covers! Enjoy the rest of the summer everyone and happy reading!

Wow look what's here already! The post office seems to be delivering mail much faster these days. I love the wrapping paper used on these books, and you are such a neat wrapper, 300dogs. They look so nice I don't even want to open them. Scratch that - yes I do lol. The picture of Skip and Rocky is great. What beautiful dogs. Well now I am going to spend the evening deciding what to pick. This is so much fun I can't stand it :0) PS - I'll be sure to write the BCID# on the inside of the box.

Hi all - I received the box on either the 16th or the 17th - I can't remember which day now. I'm sorry it has taken me a few days to get it journaled. Everything arrived in great shape. I loved the uniqueness of the wrapping of most of the books (I won't give it away). I picked out a few books last night, so now I need to dig up some books to put in. Once I get them picked out and wrapped up, I'll let you know which ones I picked. I plan on sending the box out by Satruday. I'm pm-ing the next in line now. Thanks for including me! I love this idea! :)

I don't know what happened...I just journaled this, and it didn't show up. Hopefully, it won't be a duplicate post. I received this today, so much fun! I will try to make my choices swiftly and send on. Thanks! Okay, this is what I'm putting in: A woman with her eyes closed--holding a cup of steaming coffee Red squiggly lines (don't know how else to describe it lol) A girl's face amid a spiderweb above a house A face of a girl above trees with red and brown leaves and a wolf walks beneath them A girl's face looking afraid above a gate (The last three go together--isn't it obvious? I will be back to say what I have taken out---I have to wrap mine before I unwrap the others, because I'm a freak like that! ;)

Journal Entry 55 by sarkiegirl from La Quinta, California USA on Sunday, January 31, 2010
Okay, here is what I took out! I'm pretty happy with my choices! "An intense teen with a drowning child over her shoulder" A Gift of Magic by Lois Duncan (This was funny because I guess I thought a girl was carrying a drowning child over her shoulder) One of my favorite books in the whole world is by lois Duncan called "Locked in Time!" I love her, so that's fun to discover a YA book! "Two pale blue eyes with pinpricks for pupils" Strangers by Dean Koontz I have always loved him, but I have only read a few books by him because his books are kind of long. But, I have never read this one, so I was kind of excited to find it! "Man with a rootbeer and a fist in the air" The Freedom Manifesto by Tom Hodgkinson The funny thing about this one is that I should have recognized it. I own it already!!! How could I not know? I guess I own too many books, like so many of you, right? lol The funny thing was, is that I was going to release my own version, but I wasn't sure if I could give away non-fic, or it was just a fiction kinda thing. "A boy standing under a very large umbrella" The Facts of Life by Graham Joyce...never heard of this author but it looks interesting. "A woman's arm around a young girl" Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah---never read this author but I have heard of her! Sounds interesting! Thanks so much! This was so much fun!

Hi everyone, Thanks for letting me be part of this box. I have to admit that I went a little wild. This is my first box, and all the books looked like Christmas. Seriously, I went wild (14 books)! That's right; I picked 14 books. So anyway, here goes: 1. An old graveyard -- The German Money by Lev Raphael -- This one looks really interesting. 2. A man with a sword and a bikini-clad woman -- The Magic Goes Away by Larry Niven -- I knew from the description that this was a sci-fi/fantasy book. Swords and bikinis -- it was a dead giveaway. 3. A goat eating a pair of black panties -- Even Cowgirls Get the Blues by Tom Robbins -- I *love* this book! Thanks for putting it in the box! 4. Two British frigates and a long boat on open seas -- The Truelove by Patrick O'Brian -- This one looks promising. I can't wait to read it. 5. A girl's face looking afraid, above a gate -- Dark Angel by V.C. Andrews -- This is one of a set of three. Andrews is not my favorite writer. Her books are a little icky. 6. A face of a girl above trees with red and brown leaves. A wolf walks beneath them. -- Heaven by V.C. Andrews -- See #5. 7. A girl's face amid [sic] a spiderweb above a house -- Web of Dreams by V.C. Andrews. -- See #5. 8. A woman's face against a pillow -- Temptations by Jessica March. -- This looks like beach-fare! 9. Mansion on a hill behind an open ornate gate. Lightning in the sky. -- The Association by Bentley Little -- This one is by an Edgar award-winning author. It should be good and scary. 10. Woman with a tattoo on her shoulder. -- Nothing Lasts Forever by Sidney Sheldon -- This one is not quite my style. 11. Woman in a blue sequined dress -- Advances by Samantha Joseph -- Here's another beach-read! 12. Man standing on a cliff looking out at the water -- And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie -- This is one of my favorite books! 13. A diver being strangled by an octopus tentacle -- 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne -- I thought this one was going to be Ian Fleming's Octopussy, but I was wrong. I can't wait to read this one. 14. A hooded woman holding a corpse -- Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare -- I have never read this. Hooray! Ok, those are the books I took out. I'll post the ones I added a little later. Thanks for understanding my somewhat fanatical plundering of the bookbox.

The bookbox began it's journey with 14 books and doubled its size to 29 when it came home. I will release all the books thru trades, RABCK's, bookboxes and might even keep some for a Round 2. 300 thank you's to all who participated-it was fun!
