Flaubert's Parrot (Picador Books)
16 journalers for this copy...
Synopsis
Which of two stuffed parrots was the inspiration for one of Flaubert's greatest stories? Why did the master keep changing the colour of Emma Bovary's eyes? And why should it matter so much to Geoffrey Braithwaite, a retired doctor haunted by a private secret? In "Flaubert's Parrot", Julian Barnes spins out a multiple mystery of obsession and betrayal (both scholarly and romantic) and creates an exuberant enquiry into the ways in which art mirrors life and then turns around to shape it.
A really good read - very quirky. I enjoyed reading Braithwaite's musings on his own life & his thoughts on Flaubert's life & writings.

I enjoyed this one quite a lot although I kind of got tired of it towards the end. Thanks for letting me read this one!
Now it travels to Holland. Enjoy!
The book arrived. It's going on my TBR for now
It was a nice and easy book to read, but it's not a book that I will always remember like some other books of the 1001 list.

Received yesterday, thank you!
Dreadful. How have some of these dreadful books I've read recently made it onto the 1001 BTRBYD list?!!! Oh my goodness. I could not have cared less about whatever the name of the narrator was (that shows how well I'm going to remember this book!) and I care even less about which parrot may or may not have been an inspiration. Oh well, at least that's another one down. Am currently reading a book not on the list in the hope that I'll actually enjoy it!
Will post off soon.

Thanks very much for including me on the ring for this one. I've got some ring books ahead of it, but I'll get to it as soon as I can.
I'm so sorry to have held this book up for so long. I had a load of bookrings come in at the same tine and I really don't think I'm going to get to it this side of Christmas.
It's unfair of me to hold it up any longer, so I'm going to pass it on to the next reader.
Thank you! The book arrived today. I look forward to reading it.
At first I found this book quirky, but as it went on, I grew tired of it. In fact, I don't really remember how it ended--I don't think I ever did understand what happened to the narrator's wife!
I will mail this book to UnwrittenLibra. Welcome back from Israel!

Not the best book from the 1001 books list - possibly would have been better served as FACTion rather than literary fiction - the narrator seemed a bit pointless for most of the books and I always forgot it was Geoffrey Braithwaite and not just Julian Barnes who was trundling out all the Gustave Flaubert factoids.
I've pm'd both madmegzy and tohweiee a couple of times now over the last few weeks and so far no response from either. I've also put up an ISO in the bookcrossing forum. If I don't get any response then i will probably wild release this book in the new year.

I definitely enjoyed this book - hopelessly post-modern as it is. I particularly liked the various biographies of Flaubert and the ultimately futile attempts to draw connections to his work.
Thanks for sharing this book! It will be on its way again, soon. :)

"9) That he was a pessimist.
Ah. I begin to see what you mean. You wish his books were a bit more cheerful, a bit more ... how would you put it, life-enhancing? What a curious idea of literature you do have. Is your PhD from Bucharest? I didn't know one had to defend authors for being pessimists. This is a new one. I decline to do so. Flaubert said: 'You don't make art out of good intentions'."
A very nice literary experiment, circling the essence of the plot in a very intricate manner. I loved the literary references and wish I had read more of the mentioned books more recently or at all, for that matter.
Posting to Tizzalicious tomorrow morning - enjoy :)
