Stuart McLean is one of Canada's most beloved storytellers. He has created a cast of characters that are quirky, silly and have traits that you will be quick to recognize; in yourself. Stories about the cottage vacation, cooking the Christmas turkey and days off. A nice, fun read. I hope you will enjoy finding about one of Canada's best kept secrets. I am curious to see how those who have not heard of The Vinyl Cafe will find this book..

Stuart McLean hosts a weekly radio program entitled The Vinyl Cafe which includes many of these stories, interesting guests and an odd mix of music. He has written several books and has also edited When We Were Young. Along with his duties writing and on the radio, he is a Journalism Professor at Ryerson University of Toronto.

So long, for now...

Hooray, it came in the mail today! I am trying to finish a different book right now, but I already am half-way through the first story....it's so funny, it's hard to put down!

Journal Entry 4 by Cowpunkmom from Three Hills, Alberta Canada on Monday, May 19, 2003
This book is so funny!!! I heard a lot of these stories read by the author on the radio a few years ago, so reading them was like visiting goofy old friends. The main characters, Dave and Morley, are so insane, they make me feel OK to be as crazy as I am!

This arrived in the mail yesterday but I forgot to journal it until now. I am really excited about reading this book. I love listening to him on the Internet. Thank goodness for the Internet to give me a chance to enjoy him. I will start reading this as soon as I finish the bookray book I am currently reading. Thanks onesmartcookie for starting this bookray!

I so thoroughly enjoyed this book! I finished it off on 6/16. I brought it along in my daypack and hiked out along a trail near the coast to the Wilson River. Along the river I have the perfect reading rock. I may have frightened away wildlife or other hikers by my hysterical giggling. There is no way I will even try to pick a favorite story. This may just be a book I have to go buy for myself. Thank you so much onesmartcookie for sending out this bookring! I plan to send it on it's way by 6/19.

***I sent this on to inaperfectbind and I am starting to get concerned that it never made it there.

I'm sad to report that this book has vanished. It never reached its destination.. :-(

I am so sorry!!!!

This book arrived while we were on vacation and when I found it in the huge pile of mail that accumulated while we were gone, I thought to myself, "Great, I'll have to journal this when I get a chance," and I put it on my desk, where it quickly became part of the archeological strata. I had a lot to take care of when we got back and completely forgot about it! I only remembered it today when a BCer wrote to me about another ray coming my way and I thought, "Hey, don't I have another one around here somewhere?"

So the bad news is that I'm an idiot and the good news is that it didn't get lost in the mail after all. I won't delay its progress any further; will PM next person for his/her address and send it on its way.

Again, fellow book ray participants, I'm so sorry!

Had the best intentions of sending this on as soon as I realized my error but there was just too much going on in my life. LIster252 had already read it and by the time I got in touch with phc I was in over my head again. In fact, I never did get to read it. So, again: Sorry, folks. But the good news is that the book is now officially on its way to phc, USPS tracking number 0302 1790 0003 0115 5865.

Ugh! This book must have a curse! LOL! [I am glad I am not the only one to have it go astray]

My spouse brought it in from the box, and laid it down. I just "found" it! I had no idea how long it's been here, but I will get to it, and get it moving again, as soon as I can- I am buried in an avalanche of bookrings!

Journal Entry 14 by caligula03 from Hayward, California USA on Monday, July 19, 2004
The book is here. My husband brought it home to the old house which means I'm packing it for Wednesday's move. I will read it as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 15 by caligula03 from Hayward, California USA on Saturday, October 2, 2004
I can see why Stuart McLean is one of Canada's beloved storytellers through the warmth, humanity and humor of his stories. My favorite stories came early in the book, one of them being "Turkey" which starts off both the book and the Winter section. The description of the turkey before it was roasted had me and my husband howling with laughter. Another favorite is the one about the birthday party, especially the scene where Dave tries to frost the cake while it is still warm. My husband recently made the same mistake when he was frosting my birthday cake. I think there is enough depth to this collection of stories that most any one can come away with a favorite story or at least a favorite scene.

This came in the mail yesterday. It was a very nice surprise, since I forgot it was coming. It came at the perfect time, since I had just finished another book. I love McLean's "Dave and Morley" stories and I have already started reading it.

Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 18 by miss-efficiency from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, November 2, 2004
As usual, each story was a real treat. I had heard a couple of them on the radio already (Turkey, Emil), but relished enjoying them again. I don't think I can pick a favourite -- they are all so good. So many LOL moments.

The night it came in the mail I was reading in bed until the wee hours because I didn't have to go to work the next day. At around 1:30am I burst out laughing and couldn't stop. Unfortunately I woke hubby up from his sound slumber. He was dying to know what was so cotton pickin' funny. After a few minutes I managed to curb my laughter enough to blurt out "Polyfilla!".

I will make arrangements shortly to pass it along to Cestmoi. In the meantime, hubby might have a quick go at it. One of the reasons I love these stories so much is that the kinds of things that happen to Dave are the same kinds of things that happen to me. I'm laughing stock in the office right now because I nearly set the place on fire about six weeks ago when we were toasting bagels for our friday breakfast club.

This man is a genuine storyteller. Be careful reading this one in public because you won't be able to stifle all of your hoots and hollers!!

Great , great stuff!

And the poyfilla crack was worth waking me up for. Read and you'll understand!
