I really enjoyed this book. It tells the story of Ruth, a slow simple minded girl, growing up in Honey Creek, Illinois. Ruth, like all of us, has many lessons to learn about life. Unfortunately, she pays with all she has to earn this knowledge. She questions the validity of Christianity throughout the book, all the while learning the hard way what hate and meanness do to a persons soul. This is what I feel the author has done best in this book. She shows us the content of the characters souls. She goes beyond character development, and on into their spiritual development. I can't wait to read more books by Jane Hamilton.

Wow...thats all I can say. Well, not quite ;) The atmosphere was oppressive in this book. Not that that is a bad thing. It made me feel just as trapped as young Ruth in the story of her life.
Which, in turn, made me identify with what this nightmare of a life had to be like for her. This book is beautifully written but for those more sensitive to atmosphere be warned...stock up on anti-depressants;-) 'cause you are in for a heck of a ride.

This was a very well written book...although it was a bit depressing to read. But all in all I really enjoyed reading this and will keep my eye out for more of Ms Hamilton's writing.

This was an incredibly moving story with remarkable sensitivity to Ruth's complicated emotions and life circumstances. The best writing comes toward the end and I couldn't put it down until I had finished it.
