8 out of 10

This book was a lot of fun! I thought the wordplay and literary inside jokes were hilarious! I was worried for a while that I remembered Jane Eyre incorrectly, but it all made sense in the end. I think Thursday Next is a treat; she's so fiesty. I LOVE her dad; he's my favorite character! And I would absolutely love living in a world where literature is so popular. What I wouldn't give to attend a performance of audience-participation Shakespeare!!!

This book was difficult at first to get accustomed to. I was confused for the first fifty pages or so, but once you get acclimated, it's great! I hope to read more Thursday Next novels in the future (or past, given the elasticity of time and space).

I agree with Rythmbiscuit - it takes a while to get into the style of this one - but while you are making that adjustment there are some hilarious word plays. I know as soon as I saw a quote from Millon De Floss that I was in for a good time! I ended up puzzling over every name in the book, being insecure as to whether I had missed a literary joke or not!
I think the idea of being part of a book was great. For me, the sign of a good book is if you feel you are watching it unfold in front of you. I remember I reading 'Jane Eyre' when I was young and really 'wtaching' it. Jasper Fforde has used that device to the full and created a really clever book. On top of all that - the story was good, the language fantastic and I laughed out loud at regular intervals.
Thanks, Rythmbiscuit, for sharing this one. I Hope Allbookedup has as much fun with it as I've had.

I finally finished the book yesterday. It took me quite a while to read it, I had to get used to the style and all this "Spec-ops" and "Literatec"-talk, but in the end I enjoyed it very much. The bookworms were so funny! Jasper Fforde really had some unique ideas.
I went to the post office today during my lunch break and sent it off to "jeweleee" by surface mail.
I hope all participants of this bookring will enjoy the read!

sorry it's taking me a while to get this book read, the main reason being my 9 month old son is very demanding a lot now through the day, and I don't have much spare time to read. However, I'm about 2/3s of the way through the book and will soon pass on to josh72uk. Will journal again once I've finished, thanks for your patience.

I've never read anything like this before but it was lots of fun! It did take me a while to understand what was going on, and as I often had gaps of not reading in between paragraphs due to looking after my son, I did get a bit lost from time to time. But it's a book I really enjoyed and I will definitely look out for more Jasper Fforde books, especially the Thursday Next ones. She's a feisty lass!

As Rhythmbiscuit and Fofum have already said, it took a while to get into this book. I found myself really wanting to enjoy it but confused by the number of characters initially - in fact I got to the end without being clear who some of them were!

I also found myself irrationally irritated at the start by some of the terminology. I couldn't decide whether Thursday drove a Pontiac because that was the author's intention or because this is a US imprint. As I said, irrational ... :)

Anyway, enough of my moans. I did actually enjoy the book (believe it or not!) after my initial reservations. I thought there was a feel of 1984 with all the acronyms, the war and the SpecOps hierarchy. I enjoyed looking out for the in-jokes and wordplays even though I doubt I got more than a quarter of them, if that. And of course I loved the dodos! :)

It's definitely a book I would like to read again as I think I would get more out of a second reading (and it's spurred me on to re-read Jane Eyre). I'll be looking out for the other Thursday Next books. It's such an original idea.

Thanks for the bookring, allbookedup! :)

The book arrived yesterday at my mum's house and I just collected it.
I had no idea what this was about (I had just seen the title mentioned too many times here in Bookcrossing and I decided to put it on my Wish List), and now that I've read the back cover it seems that I'm going to love it!

I'm so glad I joined this ring :D

Thanks allbookedup for starting it and dododumpling for sending it to me (I loved the postcard!)

I just finished reading the book -it took me more than I hoped for... I don't know whether it was because I was enjoying myself too much and I didn't want it to end or because I had to stop too often to figure out things that were not "normal".

At first I had trouble reading the dialogues: they seemed poor and I kept thinking that maybe that was intentional. I had the feeling that Fforde was making fun of some other mystery books (don't know which, though...). Towards the end the dialogues were better and the characters more eloquent. So, I don't know... Anyone else had that feeling about the dialogues?

I was also a bit dissapointed at the ending... Ok, a lot dissapointed. I don't know how to say it without revealing too much... Oh, well... I guess it doesn't matter :)

I'm sending the book tomorrow to gerenggat.

Oops, have just realised that I haven't journaled when I received the book. Anyway, I've finished it and think it is a great read. I loved the bookworms and all the other fantastic ideas. All these "what ifs" are just food for thought. Thanks a lot for sharing this fantastic book.

What a wonderfully funny book! I really enjoyed the adventures of Thursday Next and her loveable but eccentric family and friends. I have Lost in a Good Book awaiting on Mt TBR so I need to get it read now. I loved all of the literary "in" jokes and way Fforde made Richard III the Rocky Horror Picture Show of its time. A warning though...Do NOT read this and try and drink something at the same time! I nearly choked myself to death on a glass of water when I got to that part. LOL Thanks for including me on this ring and I will get this out to bookgal23 as soon as I receive her address.

I love this!! I can't say enough good things about this!! Who said Science Fiction can't be intelligent and literary? Particular things I enjoyed were using a sphere to plug up a time rift and Richard III a'la Rocky Horror. I HAVE to get a copy of my own!!! And the next one!!!
