This book was given to me by Canongate to review. Here's a link to the review Review of 'Gospel of no-hope!' I didn't like this book very much. There are better books /novels around for those who want to discredit the Gospel. But it's beautifully set out and it's very easy to read. (only 200 pages) What I should have said in the review (adding later in case someone missed the addition there)
is that this book is one of Canongate’s myths series. Other writers, including e.g. Margaret Atwood, Alexander McCall Smith (I really like his writings), Sally Vickers etc have all retold a myth in a contemporary and memorable way. So as Andrea said, Faber using a Da Vinci Code like story in that context does make a lot of sense. The link to Prometheus is that the crucifiction was more like torture than execution, at least in the way that Faber’s Malchus describes it. On the inside cover the book reads ‘ The Fire Gospel is an enthralling novel about the power of words to resonate across centuries, and inspire and disrupt in equal measure. Wickedly provocative …’ I’d second that :)

Released 3 yrs ago (11/13/2008 UTC) at Helsinki, Uusimaa Finland CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES: It's time to let this book go. This is a RABCK for you Hippolein. Note though that it's a retelling of a myth ... I missed that when I first read it. I love reading where books end up -and what other readers thought of the book (good and bad!) - so do please take time to make a journal entry if you possibly can. Appreciate that! And pass this book on to someone you'll know will enjoy it (and not be offended by it)

This was a very nice surprise and will certainly be read with interest and passed on afterwards! Thanks a lot for making the day double so bright (how to be good and this book) and making the day less dark (bad headache this morning, bit better now).

The Fire Gospel is really what it promises to be, a myth-based book about a Gospel (though not one that you would expect) and the idea behind it. Was great to find partly books of the bible as titles of the chapters, and the idea is brought very clear (through small hints in the book) what the myth is that Faber is trying to put in new words. The title is even explained in the book (what surprised me a bit) and the myth is followed up to the end (although the main character does get away from the punishment unlike the person in the myth). Thank you very much seethroughfaith for this wonderful book. Will be a challenge now to find an appropriate new home for the book!
