1001 books
The Moonstone, a beautiful diamond looted from an Indian temple and believed to be cursed, is given to Rachel Verinder on her eighteenth birthday, only to be stolen that very night. When Sergeant Cuff is brought in to investigate, he soon realises that no one in Rachel's household is above suspicion.

My first Wilkie Collins, but it definitely won't be my last. I do love a good mystery and this was excellent. It kept me guessing all the way through. I was kept glued to the book for the whole 464 pages of rather small print.

I'm donating it to the 1001-library.

Oooh thank you! I started to listen to a dramatised audio version, and was really enjoying it, so want to read it, too.

Glad I stopped listening to this, as the version I have is abridged. What a good read, definitely one of the best 1001 books I have read. I enjoyed the way it was narrated, it really fleshed out the characters. After just seeing Pullman's Ruby in the Smoke at the weekend, I wondered if it was a bit of a nod to The Moonstone.

Back to the Library.

Book arrived safe and sound

9 March 10 - I enjoyed this book and seemed to wizz through it seeing as it is over 460 pages. Kept you guessing till the end although I would have liked a bit more distinction between the writing styles of the narraters as they seemed to blend into one. I did have to chuckle to myself at the attempt of bookcrossing in the book!!

The Moonstone, written in 1868, is one of the oldest novels that I ever read… and one of the heftiest ones read this year. No blaming! It was an entertaining crime story, written in the good old way really. As to the style, I agree that all the narrators spoke with the author’s mouth. But in spite of that, the persons had true character traits and psychological motives for their action, which is not always so prominent in thrillers. The plot was twisty, but in spite of its by-roads, not difficult to follow, and the pieces fitted completely. The tribute to Robinson Crusoe was beautiful. And the elementary bookcrossing was cool :D

Thank you all for sharing and recycling!
