I'm really touched by this lovely box of audio-books for Roanne (my friend, an avid reader, who lost her sight - she now goes through audio books at a rate of knotts!). When I opened this box i wsas nearly crying (with joy!) - its so so good of you Shemchin - especially as such thought has clearly gone into choosing each audiobook.

I will pass them onto her over the weekend, I normally load a few at a time onto her Ipod for her, and swap out as she is finished with them, so hopefully she will enjoy these & get them on the move fairly quickly

I'm not that much into thrillers, suspence or spy novels, but as I heard good things about this one I thought why not... and enjoyed it. I liked the narrator's voice - especially how she mastered the two story lines (but she can't pronounce the name Jochen... pretty hard for non-German speakers anyway). The plot was particularly interesting as I had just watched a series about the Cambridge spies a few weeks ago.

From Wikipedia:
Restless, an espionage novel by William Boyd, was published in 2006 and won the Costa Prize for fiction. It is the story of a mother revealing to her daughter, in a series of written accounts, that she is not all that she seems to be. She is not Sally Gilmartin, as widely supposed, but Eva Delectorskaya, a half-Russian/half-English émigré co-opted after her brother Kolia's murder at an Action Francaise meeting, by Lucas Romer, working on behalf of the British secret services, in the run-up to the Second World War.
During his research for Any Human Heart, Boyd was interested in the "psychology of spying" and the motivations of Guy Burgess, Kim Philby, Anthony Blunt, and Donald Duart Maclean in particular. Sally Gilmartin is a small cog in the machine that flourished before Pearl Harbor with the specific intent of luring the Americans to join the Second World War. This consisted of planting fake maps and spinning anti-German stories in foreign newspapers - dirty tricks and media manipulation.
According to the author, it is one of the first novels to deal with the British Security Coordination service in New York. The book gained general public interest when it was chosen for inclusion in 'Book Club 2007', on the UK television show Richard & Judy, and the commercial success of the novel is evident in its inclusion on numerous 'best-seller' lists throughout the world.

Thanks for shipping.

14.10.09 I put this audio book on my PC. The CDs are going to the letterbox today.

01.12.09 Finally I finished this Audio Book. It was very interessting and I think I will listen to it again, because there was too much information for one time (perhaps I should listen to it more continously...).

9 out of 10

well, okay... I really loved this audiobook. The narrator, either! But I had some problems visualizing the various names (I need to read something, when I only hear it, I always try to figure out how to spell it):
Lucas Romer was quite easy, as I know an Axel Römer - who can at least play the tune "The Earl of Mansfield", instead of being him, and I know how the Scots pronounce his name. So being english - although I also suspected him being a German for a while - he gotta be "Romer", not "Römer". Nevertheless, it was just strange having Axel's picture in mind when the Audiobook was talking about "Romer" - don't think Axel and Lucas have much in common ;-)
I could look up Eva Delektorskaja on amazon but her brother Kolja gave me a lot to think (in my head, I always saw a "Collier") - but Ruth's son really gave me a headache: Ioccan?? What kind of name is that??? Well - when I told my boyfriend about it, sitting in his car, driving to meet Axel on a halloweenparty, he suddenly said: "Could she maybe say Jochen?" Wow. I think that's it! The poor boy's name is Jochen!

Besides the thrilling story and the fantastic narrator, I also like this audiobook because it was recorded loud enough to be understood in my car as well as on my player, standing on lively crossroads when taking the dog out. Furthermore, the tracks weren't too long, which made switching the CDs from one player to another and then finding the right entry again fairly easy.

It was the first time I again try to hear an english audiobook and I realy enjoyed it.

It is clearly spoken excluded the names and German or French parts. I like the voice and pronaunciaton of the female narrator.

Just noticed, that I did announce the arrival of this audiobook. But for some while my PC was out of order. I'm in the middle of listening and I'm quite taken by the story.

8 out of 10

This story was a very good compagnion on my way to Switzerland. Like Schneefee I found it quite weired, that a person who had lived and studied in Germany couldn`t pronounce properly the name of her own son. But she tried as hard with the Yorkshire accent and the imitation of the male voice of Lucas Romer was very sexy. Nevertheless I liked the plot and the suspense really much and try to listen again till I get the adress of the next listener of the ring.
