From the back of the book...
How can it be that the British ate better, nutritionally speaking, during the rationing years of WWII than they have since? How did we get to the point today where each of us has at least 300 man-made chemicals sloshing around inside our bodies, in untested and potentially toxic combinations? To find out how our food came to make us fat rather than healthy, James Fergusson looks back to the scientist who devised the wartime diet and follows a murky trail of industrial espionage, unsolved murder, and commercial greed right onto the plates we set before our families every day.

This was a very interesting read. I liked the Sunday Telegraph comment.. "A thought provoking agrochemical horror story"
It is both intriguing and thought provoking. The investigation into the real life murders and the account of how our food deteriorated are mixed well and make for exciting and worrying reading.

Have just finished this book. I loved most of it - the explanation for the deterioration of the food we eat in this country was fascinating, and well written. And the search to establish how and why the Drummonds were killed was also interesting.

But, there was something I found slightly unsatisfying and I can't quite put my finger on it. I think I wished the book wasn't so much a book of two halves, with the first half dealing with nutrition and farming and the second half with the murder investigation. Perhaps it all could have been woven together in some clever way? Or perhaps not.

But all in all, I really enjoyed it and am so glad that it was introduced to me (another book I'd never have read if I wasn't a bookcrosser).

I've just messaged the next on the list and will post it off when I get her details.

I was really torn by this book, hence keeping it for so long. I absolutely loved the idea of it and was gripped by the first half. I was fascinated by the chapters on chemical use and their effects, especially as I'm pregnant at the moment and have found myself doing many of the same things as the author's partner - organic boxes, breadmaking etc. The breast milk bit was a real eye opener! But... then the book changed direction and lost me. I agree with some of the previous comments and think this is definitely a book of two halves. Unfortunately I didn't make it through the second half. My partner has also been reading it while it's been residing here and she did the same - loved the first half, struggled on a bit and then gave up.
Even though I didn't finish it I still really enjoyed what I did read and learnt a lot about our weird and twisted world through it.
Thanks v much for including me - this is one of those books that I would probably never have come across if it weren't for bookcrossing. I'm very glad that I did.
Will pass on as soon as I have addy.

Oh dear... how long has this book been here?... I am ashamed.

I love a good conspiracy theory, but I think that there's more than just vague suppositions behind the murder, and undoubtedly the Dominici were the scapegoats for a more sinister motive.
Never trust the corporate food industry... the reason why we're riddled with allergies and food intolerances, as well putting on weight effortlessly, lays on their doorstep too.

It's been ages since I received the book, but I shall contact the owner of the ring to return it to her.

As I tucked into my sugar laden cereal this morning, I opened the bookbox to find this book ! Happy reading it probably won’t be but necessary if we want to make the change

Well this was an interesting read! Why haven’t they made a film of it??? A fascinating look at nutrition and the politics of it- big pharma and big agrochemicals demystified- in a whodunnit format. The narrator is slightly cloying and not a little condescending as is his wife Melissa in their oh so comfortable life. Nevertheless, he does an excellent job in bringing this mystery to the fore.

A very interesting read, there were parts that I struggled with, long chemical forula don't make for very interesting reading! I found the murder of the Drummonds and the deminishing nutritional value of our food facinating.
This book is starting to fall apart, I think that there are too many pages falling out to be able to repair it. I am going to hold on to it for a while as I think my daughter-in-law might be interested in reading it.
