Have completed the first 8 chapters of The Eyre Affair. I am enjoying it. A few puns on the detective's name, Thursday Next (I KNEW they were coming and was wondering when they would arrive.) and a character from Jane Eyre has shown up on the scene. Then there is Mr. Meakle, the lycanthrope. And the Baconians. And...

More later.

An enj'oyab-le & not too dem&ing a book to read!

You do have to come to it with a "fluid" imagination as time vertually has no meaning. The idea of characters stepping in & out of books at whim and will also takes getting used to. I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series to arrive!

It is now, since yesterday morning, on its way to grover3d. Perhaps it will arrive by Tuesday Next?

I LOVE reaching into my mailbox and finding a book. :) I picked this one up Thursday Today (ok, bad attempt at humor there), and I'm going to start on it as soon as I finish this journal entry.

I've heard it's a good idea to read Jane Eyre before reading this...I hope that's not true since it has probably been 20 years since I read J.E.! Yikes.

Thanks for making this one available, Seferim.

Charming! I finished this Monday night, and I now want to get the next Thursday Next novel. I don't know what I expected, but this is totally different than what I thought the book was going to be...this is a GREAT book. I love the fantastic situations that the characters find themselves in and the humor. I was worried that I would miss a lot of the in-jokes by not having read Jane Eyre in a while, but there was absolutely no problem. I laughed my head off at some of the character names. The lisping vampire was a hoot, and who wouldn't laugh at a production of Richard III that sounds more like a midnight showing of Rocky Horror?

Thanks for making this available Seferim! I truly enjoyed it. I can't get to the post office for a couple of days, but I'll try to mail this out to mjm by the weekend.

UPDATE!!! Mailed to MJM on 08/04/03. Enjoy!

Although I enjoyed the witty references to other books and names that were created from catchy phrases, it was sometimes hard for me to stick with. It has an interesting premise...not sure about that ending!

Will send on to ladyofunicorns on Monday.

I sent this out yesterday. I had pm'd Miss-Efficiency and then lovelife and both said they read it so I contacted AmberLee17 who gave me her address so I sent it to her. It went media mail with delivery confirmation. # is 03050830000224444555.

Bother, I got this from the mailbox midnight last night and forgot to journal it till today (well, tomorrow now, just to confuse myself.)

I'm currently rereading Jane Eyre, then reading the Wide Sargasso Sea, then this book. Soon, really!

Next in line PMed again. (No, I haven't finished it yet, but it looks short and I've been assured it reads fast...)

20 Jan 06. PMing once again with a deadline of Monday, 23 Jan -- if still no response, going on to the next in the queue. Huh. Just checked her bookshelf. I see no activity in the last 18+ months and no forum activity in 2 years.

21 Jan 06. I PMed the next in line after the next in line (which feels like it fits right in with the activities in the book...). She has since read the book; I've now PMed the person 2 down, assuming I will not hear from the next in line. Am making steady progress reading, and enjoying the book.

Finished it laaaate last night/early this morning. I'm glad I'd recently re-read Jane Eyre, and The Wide Sargasso Sea, although it really wasn't necessary. A definate romp through time/literature.

Some of you are quite ahead of me; there were several puns/wordplay twists I didn't see coming. And one that I didn't catch until it's probable dozenth repetition.

I do not anticipate a response from the next in line, but will hold until the time specified in my 3rd PM to her, just in case. The one in line after her has read the book. The one in line after her is interested and has sent her address, so I can hit the Post Office Tuesday with no problem. Seferim, thank you for starting this book ring. It's the first of what I'm sure will be many Fforde books I enjoy.

Bunzrun: > An enj'oyab-le & not too dem&ing a book to read!

ROTFLOL. I wondered when I read your post what was going on! *snirk!*

after all this time wondering if i was the only person on earth who hadn't read this, i must say i wasn't disappointed - a 1984-type world where literature is religion sounds pretty ok to me :)
however, some things did annoy me throughout the book: its semblance to the hitchaker's guide (the fish/maggot pair is a bit too obvious, even in postmodern terms of pastiche, isn't it?), the way most anologies seem pointless (i mean, is this Braxton Hicks a pun i don't get about something apparently useless but actually helfpul if you know about it? is this subbtle irony for well informed pregnant women only? is there a subtext i also do not get about "the welsh republican army"?). my point is that it is quite easy to play with words, but a good text creates new meanings in their relationships, and i can't see it happening here. the same goes for the ammount of absurd - as far as i am concerned, it only works out if bound by poweful logic, otherwise it's just jibberish... after all, not even the sky is your limit in terms of literary imagination, and such as wide context does not create meaning either unless it's carefully designed. in other words: the overall idea is brilliant, but the writing is poor - it is as if the author is well learned in terms of literary analysis techniques but deprived of a real talent...
ok, perhaps i'm being unfair; after all, i did enjoy it on the whole. especially the pacifist message (malvinas or iraq?...). in order to make up my mind totally about the book i'd need some estathistical data: was i the only one who totally forgot jane eyre's real ending until rochester goes blind? if this is a general effect, than i'll take back some of the criticism about the author's real lack of talent... that truly would be playing with hypertextual meaning, and in a very effective manner.

sorry for the long je...

posting it to kernow8 today... if the weather kindly allows me, that is.

thanks for sharing!

I am absolutely horrified to find this in my virtual TBR bookshelf still. I read it last June and it's been sitting in my study waiting to go out since then - how I've managed to not send it is beyond me. Anyway, now that I can see that it still needs to be sent I will make amends ASAP. I've contacted orchidfancier, and will send it on as soon as I have an address. All I can offer are my apologies.

As far as my recollections of reading the book go, from my reading diary I can see that I read it straight after reading Jane Eyre, which I loved and gave a 10. This I awarded an 8 - I think I found it an enjoyable, fun and imaginative read but, for me, it didn't quite measure up to its inspiration.

Me again. I was unable to contact Orchidfancier and have also tried JesseBC with no success. I think the best plan is probably to try to return it to its owner now! Seferim, please could you send your address to me and I'll get it on its way... Thanks!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

*planning to release ontop of the cigarette box outside Budgens at some point this afternoon*

A very interesting premise of an alternate England where time travel is common place is central to this book-based investigative story. The story failed to grip me, despite a few moments of pure comic genius, until Chapter 27; however after this it quickly gained pace until the end. Having read Jane Eyre would be useful before embarking of this book, however I do not believe that this is totally necessary.
