Ok, I finally got around to read this book, have no idea why it took me so long.
This is a very good short story collection.
Although I prefer Joe Hill's novels this was quite a satisfying read. Joe manages to stick a short story in the "Acknowledgements" section but unfortunately the publisher failed to deliver a table of contents.
This is one author to watch for, he writes in a way that grabs the reader even when the story is not so great, not that you'll find a lot of that here, most of the stories are good and some are great.
Only a few of the short stories fall under the Horror category, the others have all sorts of moods and characters, bound to make even the most "short story resistant reader" curious and, most likely, pleased by the surprises within this collection.
There is also a great novella that closes this volume with a golden touch.
My favorites were:
- Last Breath
- The Black Phone
- Abraham's Boys
- 20th Century Ghost
- Best New Horror
- Voluntary Committal (the novella)
