I think I found this unregistered and unloved at the Nag's Head OBCZ in Walthamstow. Looks intriguing.

By turns depressing and uplifting, this is the story of a kid from the slums of Bombay who makes it to Bollywood. It's not quite your standard 'rags to riches' tale though, and, without giving too much away, it doesn't end spectacularly well for our hero. The real star of this book though is, without a doubt, the city. Vividly brought to life we see the best and worst of Bombay, the deprivation and desperation and the opulence and waste. It's fascinating stuff written with a great eye for detail and, I think, not a little affection for the place concerned.
I've read a number of novels about India, and they've all tended to be sprawling, multi-generational affairs. This made a pleasant change by focusing on a relatively brief period of time and concentrating on a limited cast of characters.
