Synopsis
Innes? Innes, it's Isabella. Isabella Velasco...' A simple message on an answer machine. But one that made Innes Haldane's blood run cold. Isabella Velasco was a name from a past that Innes had tried hard to forget. For in 1977 both had spent a fateful year at the Unit, an experimental home for dysfunctional teenagers in Edinburgh. Now, after almost three decades, Isabella is trying to make contact. But before she can reach her, Innes learns that Isabella has committed suicide. And shock quickly turns to fear when she hears that another former patient has also recently killed himself. Has some dark event from 1977 finally come back to haunt them all?

Twenty-six years ago, Innes Haldane and a bunch of other teenagers spent a year together at "The Unit" in Edinburgh, an experimental treatment centre for dysfunctional teens. Innes has tried to put her past behind her and become a successful person, when she gets a call from Abby, another Unit member, who sounds like she's in a panic. Innes soon learns that Abby has committed suicide. As Innes starts to investigate this, she finds out that two of her fellow Unit patients are dead by suicide, one is dead by drug overdose, and one is in a catatonic state after her house and family burning to death. Innes wonders if this behaviour was programmed in to them or if there is something else going on. As she investigates further, she learns that something very troubling happened twenty-six years ago. Something that the others rather not have her learn about.

This novel gives you the perspective from many of the different characters; past and present. You would think that because of this it would be a lot more confusing, but it wasn't too bad to determine who was speaking and what time frame they were in. The story was developed quite well and there was definite tension about what had happened to the Unit patients in the past and what was happening to them in the present. My largest complaint of the book was that not enough was given away throughout the book. I was getting tired of being kept in suspense without hardly any clues given throughout the book. Other than this, it was a good, twisted mystery!

The Reunion is a thriller about a group of adolescents who are inmates at an 'avant-garde' psychiatric facility. The teens include: Danny, a charming rapist, Carrie, a drug addicted beauty, Lydia, an obese girl with a tendency to commit arson, Alex, a foul-mouthed and aggressive bully, Simon, who has an awful mother, Isabella, seemingly normal with a completely abnormal family., and Innes, the newest member.

The story revolves around the present day and the year 1977 when these teens were in 'The Unit'. In the present Isabella after many years tries to contact Innes. When Innes finally gets back to her she finds out she has committed suicide. While Innes is looking into the suicide she finds out that another member of the unit has also died. What is going on?

The Unit seemed to be a very loosely monitored group of very disturbed teens. Something must have happened and now the remaining members are either been driven to death or killing themselves.

This is a very dark story. The plot is great but Carrie who seemed to be such a part of the story was basically missing from the story. A good twisted mystery!
